Khokhlovo Village — a settlement on the Tobol River in Yalutorovsky District
Khokhlovo Village is the administrative center of Khokhlovskoye Rural Settlement in Yalutorovsky District, Tyumen Oblast. This small locality is situated on the banks of the Tobol River, a left tributary of the Irtysh, one of the region's largest waterways. About 855 people live here (as of 2014), and the settlement also includes the village of Krivolukskaya with a population of about 532 residents. Locals celebrate Village Day on the first Sunday of August — a traditional holiday when residents gather to honor their small homeland.
The web camera in Khokhlovo is installed in the center of the locality and shows a road intersection — a place where the paths of residents, passing vehicles, and pedestrians cross. This is a lively spot in the village, giving a glimpse into the everyday life of a Siberian settlement.
Origin of the Name — from the Nickname "Khokhel"
The name "Khokhlovo" comes from the surname Khokhlov, which in turn is linked to the nickname "khokhel" — an old term for a person with disheveled hair or a settler from Ukraine and the southern governorates of Russia. There is a version that the village was founded by people from those lands who brought with them not only customs but also a distinctive nickname that became fixed in the toponym. The surname Khokhlov is widespread throughout Russia, and in Tyumen Oblast it gave its name to an entire village.
Khokhlovo has a rich history tied to Siberian Old Believers. It was the Old Believers who founded this settlement, and to this day the traditions of Siberian antiquity are preserved here — from the way of life to cultural customs passed down from generation to generation.
"Siberian Antiquity" Museum and the Memory of Siege Children
The main attraction of Khokhlovo is the "Siberian Antiquity" museum, dedicated to Old Believer life and culture. It houses household items, clothing, utensils, and documents telling the story of the first settlers of these lands. The museum is not just an exhibition — it is a living connection to the past, carefully preserved by the locals.
The village also has a memorial dedicated to the children of besieged Leningrad, evacuated to Siberia during the Great Patriotic War. Khokhlovo took in the young Leningraders, and this chapter of history became part of the local identity. On Mira Street stands a Victory Memorial dedicated to the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 — a tribute to all those who perished and survived in that terrible war.
Cultural life in the village revolves around the Khokhlovo Rural House of Culture and Youth Creativity — where holidays, concerts, and creative events are held for residents of all ages. Nearby, there is a library at Mira Street, 36 — another community hub.
Khokhlovsky Kurgan — a Natural and Archaeological Monument
One of the unique features of the Khokhlovo area is the Khokhlovsky Kurgan, a regional natural monument established in 2000. This area is protected to preserve the diversity of animal, plant, and fungal species, including those listed in the Red Books of Tyumen Oblast and Russia. The kurgan burial mound is simultaneously a natural and an archaeological monument — ancient burials of scientific interest are located here.
Khokhlovsky Kurgan is a rare example of a territory where natural and cultural heritage intertwine. The steppe ecosystems of the kurgan preserve vegetation characteristic of pre-agrarian landscapes of the Trans-Urals, while the archaeological layer holds traces of ancient peoples who lived on the banks of the Tobol centuries ago.
The Tobol River — the Village's Waterway
Khokhlovo Village is located on the banks of the Tobol — a river that has shaped the lives of local residents for centuries. The Tobol is a left tributary of the Irtysh, one of the largest rivers in Tyumen Oblast. In May 2024, due to rising water levels in the Tobol, the Khokhlovo — Krivolukskaya road was closed, a reminder of how the river affects the daily lives of villagers.
In 2024, employees of the Tyumen Vodokanal cleaned more than two kilometers of the Tobol River bank near Khokhlovo Village of garbage. This campaign was part of environmental efforts to preserve the river — the region's most important water resource, which not only provides water but also shapes the landscape around Khokhlovo.
Village Life Today
Khokhlovo is a typical Siberian village with a stable way of life. Agricultural enterprises operate here, social facilities function, and infrastructure is maintained. The two-story buildings in the center are administrative and cultural institutions, while the one-story houses are the private sector where families live, many of whom have been connected to this place for several generations.
The road intersection shown by the online camera is, in a sense, the heart of the village. Paths diverge in different directions from here: to the river, toward Yalutorovsk, to neighboring villages. The paved road and the area with parked cars show that the village is alive — people commute to work, to the city, to relatives, and vehicles arrive here with goods and cargo.
What the Camera Shows
The Khokhlovo web camera broadcasts a road intersection in the center of the locality. The image shows a paved road with a fork and an adjacent open area where parked cars are usually located. On the left is a two-story building with a sign and a canopy — one of the central structures of the village. In the center of the background, another two-story building is visible, and on the right are one-story structures.
In the foreground are wooden and concrete poles with overhead power lines crossing the frame. In the middle of the area, a bus stop is visible — an important element of the village's transport infrastructure. Landscaping includes lawns, shrubs, and trees in the background, creating a familiar Siberian landscape. The real-time camera allows you to observe the movement of vehicles and pedestrians, and how the situation at the intersection changes throughout the day.
