De Vijf Bruggen is a railway hub on the eastern side of Amsterdam Centraal Station, often mistaken for pedestrian bridges for tourists. In reality, these are technical steel structures spanning the Oostertoegang waterway, connecting Open Havenfront and the IJ river. The Five Bridges of Amsterdam handle all eastbound rail traffic from the city's main station, and it is this hub that you can watch on this online camera.

History of Bridge Construction

The bridges were originally built in the late 19th century — around 1889, simultaneously with the construction of Central Station. The steel structures served as the backbone of rail traffic heading east from the station for decades. However, age and growing passenger numbers demanded a large-scale reconstruction.

Since 2024, ProRail has been implementing the bridge replacement project: 4 steel and 1 concrete bridge are being replaced one per year. The project is funded under the PHS-Amsterdam CS (Hoogfrequent Spoorvervoer) program. A consortium led by Dura Vermeer with Hollandia and Mammoet is carrying out the work, and Brug 5 was already put into operation in April 2025.

Railway Routes Through the Five Bridges

All eastbound rail routes from Amsterdam Centraal pass through the Vijf Bruggen. These include Intercity trains to Utrecht, Arnhem, and Nijmegen, suburban Sprinter services, Nightjet night trains, and international trains to Germany. How to Get to the Five Bridges

The Vijf Bruggen are not a pedestrian tourist attraction — they are technical railway bridges with restricted access. However, they can be observed from the De Ruijterkade embankment on the eastern side of the station. Simply exit Central Station via the eastern exit and walk along the railway tracks — the bridges are visible from there in both directions. Scale of the Oostertoegang Project

The Oostertoegang project is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Netherlands. Its goal is to increase the capacity of Amsterdam Centraal Station to 275,000 passengers per day by 2030. Replacing the historic bridges with modern structures is a key phase of this program, and you can watch the progress of the work right on this live stream.
