Dam Square — the heart of Amsterdam

Dam Square is the main square of Amsterdam and one of the most recognizable symbols of the Netherlands. This is the place where the city's history began more than seven centuries ago. Today, the capital's main attractions are concentrated here: the Royal Palace, the National Monument, the Nieuwe Kerk, and Madame Tussauds. History of Dam Square

Dam Square originated in the 13th century when a dam was built on the Amstel River at this location — it is from this dam that the square took its name, and around it the future Amsterdam grew. In the Middle Ages, there was a fish market and a ship dock here. Gradually, the square became the political and commercial center of the city. Urban life revolved around it for seven centuries: merchants traded here, kings were proclaimed, and victories were celebrated.

National Monument

At the center of Dam Square stands the National Monument — a memorial to the victims of World War II. It is a 22-meter travertine-clad pylon, with a sculptural composition and a memorial wall with a bas-relief. The monument was erected in 1956. The architect was Jacobus Johannes Oud (J.J.P. Oud), the sculptor was John Rädecker. Every year on May 4, a national remembrance ceremony is held at the monument.

Royal Palace

To the right of the National Monument rises the Royal Palace (Koninklijk Paleis) — one of three palaces in the Netherlands at the monarch's disposal. The building was constructed between 1648 and 1665 to a design by architect Jacob van Campen. Originally the building served as the city hall and was ceremonially opened on July 29, 1655. In 1808, the building was converted into a royal residence. The building is inspired by Roman architecture. In 2013, in the Moses Hall (former city council chamber), Queen Beatrix signed the document of abdication in favor of her son Willem-Alexander.

Nieuwe Kerk and Other Attractions

On Dam Square, in addition to the Royal Palace and the National Monument, are located: the 15th-century Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) — the site of coronations of Dutch monarchs, as well as Madame Tussauds wax museum. The Nieuwe Kerk was built in the 15th century in Gothic style and is today one of the most significant churches in the Netherlands. Coronations and inaugurations of monarchs take place here, as well as exhibitions and concerts.

How to Get to Dam Square

Dam Square is located in the very center of Amsterdam, within walking distance of Central Station (Amsterdam Centraal Station). From the station, the square can be reached on foot in 10-15 minutes along Damrak Street. The square can also be reached by trams 4, 9, 14, 16, 24, and 25 — the "Dam" stop is right on the square. For those arriving by car, there are several parking lots nearby, but parking in central Amsterdam is paid and limited.

Many interesting places are concentrated around Dam Square. In the immediate vicinity is the famous Red Light District (De Wallen), the Amsterdam Museum, the Anne Frank House, and Royal Theater Carré. Kalverstraat Street is home to the main shops and shopping centers. Next to the square is the De Bijenkorf department store — the oldest and most prestigious shopping center in the Netherlands. Art lovers can visit the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, located a few minutes away by tram.
