Within this system, Kjafasan serves as the southern gateway of North Macedonia: both tourist and freight traffic between the ports of Durrës and Vlorë and the interior of the peninsula passes through it.

Modernization and Highway Construction

Currently, an infrastructure modernization project is underway at the border crossing, including the construction of the Tetovo — Kjafasan highway section. This project involves converting the existing two-lane road into a full-fledged highway with a median barrier and modern interchanges. The construction of the Tetovo — Kjafasan section is being carried out as part of the expansion of Corridor 8 and is expected to significantly increase the route's capacity, reduce travel time, and improve safety on the mountainous sections.

Border Control Infrastructure

Border and customs services of both countries operate at the crossing. During peak seasons — in summer and on holidays — queues of passenger cars and tourist buses form here.
