Bevk Square Nova Gorica — Live Webcam Online Streaming
The Main Square of Nova Gorica and Its History
Nova Gorica is a young city in western Slovenia, founded after World War II when the border between Yugoslavia and Italy divided the historic town of Gorizia. The city was established in 1947 and today is home to around 20,000 people. Bevk Square became the heart of the new city — a wide pedestrian space connecting the eastern and western parts of Nova Gorica.
The square is named after France Bevk — an outstanding Slovenian writer, poet, and translator born in this region. Bevk is considered one of the most prolific authors of 20th-century Slovenian literature, and the central square of the city was named in his honor to recognize his contribution to culture.
The Architectural Ensemble of the Square
The space of Bevk Square is shaped by modern architecture typical of post-war construction. The area features commercial buildings, shops, and cafés with outdoor seating for visitors. One of the key structures is the France Bevk Public Library, designed by the architectural firm Ravnikar Potokar. The library building symbolically completes the axis linking the historic center of Italian Gorizia and the municipal palace in Nova Gorica.
The square is paved with tiles, with trees growing in the center that provide shade on hot days. This is a gathering place for locals and tourists alike — families with strollers stroll here, children ride bicycles, and residents meet at cafés.
Nova Gorica on the Border with Italy
Nova Gorica's unique location — right on the border with Italy — makes Bevk Square part of a cross-border space. The city's railway station is located approximately 50 meters from the border. Nearby, on the shared square of Nova Gorica and Italian Gorizia, you can literally stand with one foot in Slovenia and the other in Italy.
The proximity to the Italian town of Gorizia defines the atmosphere of this place — Slovenian and Italian cultures blend here, and both languages can be heard on the streets. This makes Bevk Square particularly interesting to observe: the camera captures a diverse crowd — both local residents and tourists crossing the border.
Casino Perla and EDA Center
In the immediate vicinity of Bevk Square is the Casino Perla — one of the largest casinos in Europe. The distance from the casino to the Soča River is approximately 2.5 km. Nearby is the EDA Center, which offers a panoramic view of Casino Perla and Bevk Square.
These facilities enliven the central part of the city — in the evening, lights come on, and the flow of casino visitors adds dynamism to the streets around the square.
How to Get to Bevk Square
Bevk Square is located in the center of Nova Gorica and is easily accessible on foot from anywhere in the city. The railway station is just a few minutes' walk away. The station is located 50 meters from the border with Italy, making it a convenient starting point for tourists arriving from Italian Gorizia.
For those traveling by car, a road connecting Slovenia with Italian Trieste passes through Nova Gorica. Parking in the city center is within walking distance of the square.
The Soča River and Natural Surroundings
Although the webcam at Bevk Square shows the urban space, it is important to know that 2.5 km from the center flows the famous Soča River — a natural gem of Slovenia with emerald-turquoise water. The Soča attracts rafting enthusiasts, anglers, and hikers exploring its scenic banks.
The coastal region of Slovenia where Nova Gorica is located enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate — winters are warm here, and summers are not as scorching as in the south of the country. This makes Bevk Square a pleasant place for walks almost year-round.
