European Square in Nova Gorica — Online Webcam
European Square in Nova Gorica is a place where you can literally stand with one foot in each of two different countries. This online camera offers a view of a unique urban center divided by the state border between Slovenia and Italy. The live stream allows you to observe the life of a cross-border space where history and modernity intertwine.
A Unique Open-Air Border
Transalpina Square, or Trg Evrope, is an urban center split between two countries. The Slovenian half is called European Square, while the Italian side is known as Piazza della Transalpina. The webcam online shows the Slovenian part, where flagpoles with national flags, including the Italian one, are installed, highlighting the proximity of the neighboring state. Along the square runs the border line with boundary markers marking the frontier between the two countries.
History of Division and Reunification
As recently as the last century, this was a single town called Gorizia. However, after the 1947 Paris Peace Treaty, the border between Yugoslavia and Italy split it apart: the historic center remained in Italy, while the suburbs that went to Yugoslavia were merged into a newly planned town — Nova Gorica. For many years the square was divided by a wall, but today it stands as a symbol of unity. At the center of the square lies the "Mosaic of the New Europe", laid out from stones of the old border markings — the central symbolic feature of the location.
Nova Gorica and Gorizia — Capital of Culture
Nova Gorica and the Italian Gorizia became the first-ever joint European Capital of Culture. This is the first time this title has united two cities from two different countries. Cultural events are regularly held in the square and the cities: music festivals, art exhibitions, gastronomic and wine festivals, as well as concerts by international stars. The real-time online camera lets you see how locals and tourists enjoy this cultural space.
How to Get to the Square
The square is located right next to the Nova Gorica railway station, making it easily accessible for travelers. The nearest international airport is in Trieste, Italy, approximately 35 km away. Hop-on hop-off shuttle buses are also available for tourists, which is convenient for exploring local attractions.
What's Nearby: Castles and Bridges
There are many interesting places in the surrounding area. Just 10 km away stands Kromberk Castle — a 13th-century Renaissance fortress, which serves as the main exhibition space of the Goriška Museum. Also nearby are the Perla Park and Casino, Holy Mount, the famous Solkan Bridge, and the Transalpina Stadium. The tourist information center can help you navigate the variety of routes.
What You Can See on the Camera
The webcam with a view of Nova Gorica broadcasts the central town square. In the foreground, a modern dark-colored street lamp post is visible. In the center of the square is a decorative circular element with a radial striped pattern of light and dark stone, where people often stroll. On the left, you can see parked bicycles, benches, and trees with green canopies. In the background are white residential and public buildings with characteristic red tiled roofs in European architecture. The street stretches between the buildings into the depths of the city, with trees growing along the road. Flagpoles with flags are installed on the right, and the square is paved with light-colored stone with a geometric pattern.
