The Story Behind the Name: From a Bet to Worldwide Fame

The mountain got its modern name in honor of Chinese immigrant Ha Ling, who in October 1896 made the first ascent of the summit, winning a bet for $50. Ha Ling worked as a cook at the Oskaloosa Hotel in the Minerside area and was an employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Originally the peak was called "Chinaman's Peak," but on October 22, 1896, at the suggestion of the Medicine Hat News newspaper, it was renamed Ha Ling Peak. After Ha Ling's first ascent, he was not believed, and he climbed the mountain again, planting a large flag that was visible from Canmore.
