Medieval Fortress on a Rocky Ledge

The Ljubuški webcam reveals a majestic panorama, with an ancient structure at its center. At the top of the central hill, a medieval castle-fortress rises on a rocky ledge, surrounded by dense vegetation. Ljubuški Fortress stands on the southern peak of the Buturovica hill range, at an altitude of 349 meters above sea level. Steep slopes on three sides made it accessible only from the north, which historically rendered it impregnable. The fortress is located on a prominent peak of the karst rocky ridge of Buturovica hill, situated at the eastern edge of Ljubuško Polje.

History of the Castle from the Kosačas to the Ottoman Empire

These walls remember the times when the Balkans were a point of intersection for the interests of great empires. Ljubuški Fortress was built by Duke Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, whose title gave Herzegovina its name. The fortress is also known as the Fortress of Herceg Stjepan or the Old Town of Ljubuški. In 1463, Ljubuški Fortress first fell into Ottoman hands, but they held it for only a month and were forced to retreat due to food shortages. By 1475, the Ottomans had finally conquered this part of Herzegovina.

The Town in the Valley and Surroundings
