Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles — Live Webcam
Hollywood Sign: A Symbol of Dreams on the Hill
Nine white letters on a green slope — perhaps the most recognizable symbol in the world. The Hollywood Sign has towered over Los Angeles for decades, and this webcam lets you see it right now, in real time. The camera is positioned so that on screen you can see the famous "HOLLYWOOD" inscription against the backdrop of the Hollywood Hills, with sparse vegetation and dry grass typical of the California chaparral.
Millions of people dream of being here, but getting close to the sign is impossible — it's located on protected territory. That's why the live webcam with a view of the Hollywood Sign is the best way to examine the legend in detail without leaving home.
From a Billboard to a Global Icon
Few people remember, but these letters were not created for the film industry at all. The sign was created in 1923 as an advertisement for the upscale residential complex "Hollywoodland" — a new neighborhood in the hills above Los Angeles. At the time, it was a standard advertising structure that was supposed to be removed after a year and a half.
Originally, the hill read not "HOLLYWOOD" but "HOLLYWOODLAND" — four additional letters completed the name of the residential complex. The structure was assembled from wooden supports and sheet metal, and inside it housed 4,000 light bulbs that lit up alternately at night, first illuminating parts of the word, then the entire inscription.
By the 1940s, the structure had deteriorated, and the last four letters were removed. By that time, Hollywood had already become the world's film capital, and the sign took on a new meaning — a symbol of dreams and fame. In 1973, the legendary letters were declared a National Historic Landmark.
Numbers and Facts: What You Need to Know
The Hollywood Sign is located on the southern slope of Mount Lee at an elevation of 491 meters above sea level — directly above the Los Angeles neighborhood of the same name. Each of the nine letters is impressive in size: the letters are 13.7 meters (45 feet) tall — roughly the height of a five-story building. The total length of the inscription is about 110 meters.
Interestingly, the original 1923 letters were even taller — 15.2 meters (50 feet) — but during reconstruction they were made slightly smaller. The modern structure is made of steel and is regularly coated with fresh white paint to keep the letters bright against the green hills.
In 1978, the sign experienced a second birth. By that time, it was in a sorry state, and funds for its restoration were raised through a charitable campaign. Rock musician Alice Cooper and Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner organized the fundraising, and the new version of the sign was unveiled on November 14, 1978 — on the 75th anniversary of Hollywood. The unveiling ceremony was watched live by 60 million viewers.
Why You Can't Get Close to the Sign
Contrary to popular belief, you cannot get close to the Hollywood Sign — it's prohibited, as it's located on protected territory. It can only be observed from a considerable distance — from designated viewing platforms in Griffith Park or from the Beachwood Canyon neighborhood.
The sign's maintenance and protection is handled by the nonprofit Hollywood Sign Trust, originally established by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in 1978. The area is under round-the-clock security, and violators face hefty fines. That's why the live webcam with a view of the Hollywood Sign is the perfect way to see the legend without risking a fine.
Hollywood Hills: Nature and Panorama
Mount Lee is part of the Santa Monica Mountains, which stretch along the California coast. The vegetation here is typical of the Mediterranean climate: dry shrubs, chaparral, sparse grasses that turn golden in the summer heat. In winter, when the rains come, the hills turn green, and in spring wildflowers bloom.
From the hilltop, there's a panorama of all of Los Angeles — from downtown to the Pacific coast. On clear days, you can see the Griffith Observatory dome, Downtown skyscrapers, and even Catalina Island on the horizon. The camera captures not only the sign but also the surrounding landscape — hills covered in dry grass and the clear California sky.
What You Can See on the Camera
This webcam shows the Hollywood Sign in real time — nine white letters "HOLLYWOOD" on the slope of Mount Lee. On screen, you can see the large white letters set on a dry hill with sparse vegetation, shrubs, and dry grass. At the top of the hill on the right side, people are sometimes visible — tourists hiking up the trails to the viewing platforms.
The camera operates live, so the image changes depending on the time of day and weather. In the morning, the letters are illuminated by the eastern sun; during the day, they stand out brightly against the green hills; and at sunset, the sky behind the sign turns orange and pink. This live webcam is your chance to see one of the world's most recognizable landmarks at any time, without having to travel to Los Angeles.
