Engraved on the pedestal is a quote from Shakespeare's "Hamlet" — the play in which Hamlet asks how the legendary queen of Troy mourned the death of her husband. At the same time, Shakespeare's name is written as "Shakespear" without the letter "e" — a decision that sparked lively debate in academic circles. USC explained this spelling by noting that it was used in previous centuries, and the choice was made for the "ancient feel" of the bronze sculpture.

Student Traditions Around Hecuba

The Hecuba statue quickly became not just an architectural element, but a living symbol of student life. During "Conquest Week" — the week before the game against main rival UCLA — there is a tradition of "Hecuba Watch". Members of the USC Helenes women's society organize shifts at the statue to protect it from pranks by students from the University of California, Los Angeles.
