Technical Specifications of Runways 24L and 24R

Los Angeles International Airport has four parallel runways that are 150 feet (45.7 m) wide, oriented along an east-west axis. The north complex includes runways 24R/6L and 24L/6R, while the south complex has 25R/7L and 25L/7R. Runway 6R/24L is 10,885 feet (3,318 m) long and made of grooved concrete, which provides reliable traction for landing gear even in rainy weather.

As part of a major modernization program from 2015–2017, the airport implemented a project to improve runway safety areas. The south runway of the north complex (24L) was moved 340 feet (103.6 m) south, which required the demolition of terminals 1, 2, 3, and part of the international TBIT terminal. As of 2023, reconstruction of runway 6L/24R surface and construction of new taxiway exits continues.

Westerly Operations: How LAX Runways Work

The airport's dominant configuration is Westerly Operations, used approximately 96% of the time under visual meteorological conditions. Under this scheme, aircraft take off to the west, over the Pacific Ocean, and approach for landing from the east. This minimizes noise impact on residential areas of the city.

During Westerly Operations, LAX controllers prefer to use "inboard" runways — 24L and 25L, which are easier to access from terminal taxiways. The airport's capacity under visual meteorological conditions is 167–176 operations per hour — takeoffs and landings combined.

Theme Building: Architectural Dominant in the Frame

One of the most recognizable objects in the webcam frame is the Theme Building, built in 1961. The building was designed by architect Paul Williams of Pereira & Luckman in the Googie style — Space Age pop-modern. The structure resembles a flying saucer that has landed on four supports and became a symbol of the jet age.

Road Infrastructure: Access Routes to LAX

The main transportation artery of the airport is Imperial Highway, through which passengers and cargo reach the terminals. In 2024, a bike lane was being constructed on this highway as part of a program to improve ground access to the airport.

The LAX ATMP (Airport Terminal Modernization Program) project received an additional $1 billion for modernizing the airport's road infrastructure and surrounding areas. These investments are aimed at reducing congestion on access roads and improving transportation accessibility for passengers.
