Kushvinskoye Reservoir in Kushva — Online Webcam
History of Kushvinskoye Reservoir: From Factory Pond to City Landmark
Kushvinskoye Reservoir is one of the oldest artificial water bodies in the Urals, its history inextricably linked to the development of metallurgy in the region. The reservoir appeared in 1739 as the factory pond of the Kushva Metallurgical Plant. At that time, the dam on the Kushva River was created exclusively for industrial needs — to supply water to blast furnaces and factory machinery. Since then, the reservoir has undergone significant changes but has retained its role as the most important hydraulic engineering structure in the city of Kushva.
A large-scale reconstruction of the hydraulic structures of Kushvinskoye Reservoir was carried out in 1952–1959 according to the design of the State All-Union Trust "Vodokanalproyekt." It was during this period that the dam acquired its modern shape, and the reservoir received the parameters that have been maintained to this day. The reconstruction made it possible to increase the useful capacity of the reservoir and improve the reliability of the entire hydraulic system.
Geographic Location and Reservoir Parameters
Kushvinskoye Reservoir is located in Sverdlovsk Oblast and belongs to the channel valley type. The dam is situated on the Kushva River, a tributary of the Tura, just 5 km from its mouth, where these two rivers merge to form the Verkhnyeturinskoye Reservoir. This location makes the Kushva Pond part of a large water system in the Tura basin.
The reservoir is impressive in its dimensions. The water surface area is 3.8 km², and the total volume reaches 11.05 million m³. The useful volume of 9.1 million m³ allows for seasonal regulation of the Kushva River flow. The catchment area is 128 km², ensuring stable filling of the reservoir even during low-water periods.
The hydraulic structures of the reservoir are also impressive. The maximum height of the dam is 11.5 meters, and its length is 156 meters. The crest elevation of the dam is at 225.3 meters. These parameters make Kushvinskoye Reservoir a significant hydraulic engineering facility not only for the city but for the entire Kushva District.
Purpose and Role of the Reservoir in City Life
Today, Kushvinskoye Reservoir serves several important functions. First and foremost, it remains a source of industrial and domestic water supply. The reservoir is used for technical water supply to the boiler house, which provides heating for the entire city of Kushva. This makes the reservoir a critical infrastructure for the city's life support.
In addition to its industrial purpose, the reservoir is actively used for recreation by city residents and visitors. The shores of the reservoir attract walking enthusiasts, and in the warm season, the embankment is filled with people enjoying the views of the water surface and the forested opposite shore. The reservoir has become an integral part of the city's landscape and a gathering place for residents.
Nature and Inhabitants of the Kushva Pond
The flora and fauna of Kushvinskoye Reservoir are diverse. The opposite shore is covered with forests and fields, creating a picturesque natural backdrop for the water surface. Trees and green plantings grow along the embankment, transforming the shoreline into a green oasis amid the urban development during the summer months.
The reservoir is rich in fish, attracting fishing enthusiasts. Local residents tell of impressive catches. Once, a giant pike measuring 1.2 meters in length, aged 25–30 years was caught from the Kushva Pond. This event became a real sensation and confirmed that the reservoir maintains a healthy ecosystem with large predators.
The ice regime of the reservoir is typical for the Urals. Ice cover is established on average by early November, and the reservoir clears of ice by late April to mid-May. These dates may shift depending on weather conditions, but overall the ice cover persists for about half a year.
How to Get to Kushvinskoye Reservoir
Kushvinskoye Reservoir is located in the central part of the city of Kushva, making it easily accessible for visitors. The reservoir stretches along the coastal part of the city, with a road running along the shore for vehicle traffic. The nearest landmarks are a road intersection with a pedestrian crossing and multi-story residential buildings visible from the opposite shore.
For those traveling by car, there is a parking area to the right of the embankment where you can leave your vehicle and walk to the shore. Public transport also provides access to the reservoir — bus stops are located in close proximity to the coastal zone. Kushva is 200 km from Yekaterinburg and connected by road, making the reservoir accessible for day trips from the Ural capital.
Infrastructure and Development Around the Reservoir
The shores of Kushvinskoye Reservoir combine natural and urban elements. On one side of the reservoir rise multi-story residential and commercial buildings, forming a modern cityscape. On the other, views of forests and fields open up, reminiscent of the natural origins of these places.
A road with traffic signs runs along the embankment, as well as sidewalks for pedestrians. Advertising billboards along the shore road indicate commercial activity in the area. A small single-story building visible from the opposite side adds color and contrast to the multi-story development.
What the Camera Shows
The online camera at Kushvinskoye Reservoir broadcasts an aerial view of the coastal part of the city of Kushva. In the center of the frame is a road intersection with a pedestrian crossing, where cars continuously move and pedestrians hurry about their business. A road with active traffic runs along the shore of the reservoir, and a billboard is visible nearby.
The main subject of the broadcast is the water surface of Kushvinskoye Reservoir with the opposite shore covered in forest and fields. Trees and green plantings, road signs, and landscaping elements are located along the embankment. On the right side of the frame rise multi-story residential and commercial buildings, as well as a parking area with parked cars. On the left, a small single-story building is visible, creating a contrast with the surrounding development.
The webcam in real time allows you to observe the life of Kushva's coastal zone: watch traffic at the intersection, observe pedestrians at crossings, and enjoy views of the reservoir and the forested arrays of the opposite shore. The live broadcast operates around the clock, and at any time you can see how the lighting of the water surface and the cityscape changes.
