Ivan Zajc Croatian National Theatre in Rijeka — Online Webcam
An Iconic Building on Rijeka's Square
The Ivan Zajc Croatian National Theatre is one of the architectural landmarks of central Rijeka. This neoclassical building with its distinctive green copper dome roof and grand colonnade is visible from the square where the webcam is located. The facade is designed in the High Renaissance style with decorative elements that are clearly visible in daylight. The theatre became one of Croatia's four national theatres after the country gained independence in 1991.
History of the Theatre Building
The first theatre building in Rijeka appeared as early as 1765, but by the end of the 19th century the city had outgrown it and needed a larger stage. In 1883, the city government led by Mayor Giovanni Cottamagni decided to build a grand theatre. The project was entrusted to Viennese architects Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner — by that time they had already designed over 40 theatres across Europe. The grand opening took place on 3 October 1885 — the premiere featured Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Aida".
The theatre was named after the Croatian composer, conductor and educator Ivan Zajc (1832–1914) in 1953. A native of Rijeka, Zajc studied in Milan and worked in the major opera houses of Austria-Hungary, leaving behind over 1,000 musical compositions. Today, the abbreviation HNK Zajc is known to every resident of the Primorje region.
Architectural Features
The theatre building is constructed in the neoclassical tradition with Baroque elements. The main facade is adorned with a colonnade and decorative ornamentation characteristic of Austro-Hungarian theatre architecture of the late 19th century. The dome, covered with green copper patina, has become one of the visual symbols of Rijeka. Inside, the auditorium seats around 600 spectators and has preserved its historic interior with restorations.
Location in the City Centre
The theatre is located at Ulica Ivana Zajca 1 in the very heart of Rijeka, within walking distance of the main attractions. Nearby are the bus station, Tržnica market, and the pedestrian street Korzo — the city's main promenade. The square in front of the theatre serves as a transport hub: tram tracks run through it and public transport stops here.
Theatre Park and Public Space
In front of the theatre facade lies the Theatre Park — a green area with trees, shrubs and Mediterranean plants. The park features benches, park lighting and a monument to Ivan Zajc. It is a popular spot for walks among locals and tourists, especially in the warm season when perennial flowers bloom. The park paths lead to the central square, where the main tourist life is concentrated.
Cultural Life and Repertoire
Today the theatre operates as a multi-profile venue: it hosts dramatic performances, opera productions and ballet programmes. The repertoire combines classical works with contemporary Croatian plays. The building is part of the European Route of Historic Theatres, which brings together over 120 venues from Rome to Saint Petersburg.
