View of the Heart of Rijeka — Adriatic Square
Adriatic Square is one of the central locations in the Croatian city of Rijeka, where history and modernity meet. This online webcam shows the square in real time: a decorative fountain in the foreground, historic buildings with columns, modern office structures, and a busy road with traffic. In the background, the hills characteristic of the Kvarner coastal landscape are visible.
The square is located in close proximity to the port harbor, making it an important transport and tourist hub of the city. Watching this online camera is interesting both for tourists planning a trip to Croatia and for those who want to feel the atmosphere of a Mediterranean city at any time of day.
History of the Square: From Empress Elisabeth to the Present Day
Adriatic Square, also known as Jadranska, received its current name in 1945 after the city was liberated by units of the Yugoslav People's Army during World War II. Before that, it was named after Empress Elisabeth, the wife of the Austro-Hungarian monarch Franz Joseph I, reflecting Rijeka's centuries-long connection with the Austrian period of history.
The name "Jadranska" is connected to the fact that Croats call the Adriatic Sea the Jadran Sea (Jadran). The Italian name of the square is Adriatico piazza, which also points to the city's maritime orientation. Rijeka has been an important port on the Adriatic for centuries, and the square symbolically faces the sea.
Architectural Dominants of the Square
The main decoration of Adriatic Square is the Adria Palace (Jadranska Palace), a monumental administrative and office building on the waterfront. Four columns are crowned with sculptures of four maritime directions: Japanese, Egyptian, Indian, and Euro-American. At the main entrance stands a sculpture of the Elder Titan or Giant, emphasizing the building's maritime theme.
One facade of the palace faces the port, the other faces the square. Baroque-style portals with stone pillars create a sense of monumentality and grandeur. The palace is an architectural monument and one of Rijeka's calling cards.
Another architectural gem is the 14-story Rijeka Skyscraper (Riječki neboder), the city's first high-rise building, completed in 1939. Also known as the Arbori Palace. This building became a symbol of Rijeka's modernization during the interwar period and remains a prominent part of the city's skyline.
