The yard's history dates back to 1905, when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CB&Q) began developing it into one of the largest classification yards in the world. In 1970, a major consolidation took place: CB&Q was absorbed by the Burlington Northern Railroad (BN), which carried out a large-scale modernization of the facility through 1984. The final step in forming today's operator was the merger of BN and Santa Fe in 1995, resulting in the current BNSF corporation.

Capacity and Records

The volume of rail traffic here is measured in thousands of cars. The maximum daily capacity of the classification yard after modernization reached 2,500 freight cars per day. But the railroaders are not resting on their laurels. In April 2021, the Galesburg classification yard team broke four records for the average number of cars processed per day. To increase volumes and relieve congestion, BNSF is implementing an expansion project. BNSF is carrying out a yard expansion project that adds a second parallel hump, which will allow processing approximately 3 additional trains or ~300 more cars per day.
