Adrian's Railway Infrastructure: A Junction of Three Main Lines
The city of Adrian in Lenawee County, Michigan is where the tracks of three historic railroads once intersected. Lake Shore & Michigan Southern, Wabash Railroad, and Detroit, Lima & Northern Railroad — all three lines converged near the city center, forming a transportation hub of regional significance. Today, freight trains continue to operate along portions of these tracks under the management of the short line railroad Adrian & Blissfield Rail Road.
Adrian & Blissfield Rail Road: A Short Line with a Long History
The Adrian & Blissfield Rail Road (ADBF) is a Class III short line railroad operating a route of approximately 20 miles (32 km) between Adrian and Riga. The line runs through Lenawee County and serves local shippers. ADBF was incorporated on February 6, 1991 with headquarters in Westland, Michigan. In June 2021, the company came under the control of Transportation Holdings, LLC.
In addition to its main line, ADBF manages several other short line railroads in southern Michigan: Charlotte Southern Railroad, Detroit Connecting Railroad, and Jackson & Lansing Railroad. This network provides freight transportation for regional industrial enterprises, connecting them to Class I main lines.
Erie & Kalamazoo: One of the Oldest Railroads in the U.S.
The railroad line now operated by ADBF is part of a historic segment built by the Erie & Kalamazoo Railroad, founded on April 22, 1833. The original goal of the project was to connect Port Lawrence (now Toledo, Ohio) with the Kalamazoo River via Adrian. The 33-mile line was opened on November 2, 1836.
Notably, the first operating railroad in Michigan was horse-drawn — it was the 1836 segment between Adrian and Toledo that began operations using horse power. And in 1888, Adrian became the first city in the state to approve an electric railroad.
Three Railroads in One City
What makes Adrian unique is that the tracks of three major railroads converged here. All three historic lines intersected near the city center. Lake Shore & Michigan Southern later became part of New York Central, then Penn Central and Conrail. Wabash Railroad became part of Norfolk & Western, and later Norfolk Southern. Detroit, Lima & Northern evolved into Detroit Toledo & Ironton. Today, the legacy of these railroads is partially preserved in ADBF's infrastructure.
Around Adrian: Nature and Transportation
Adrian is a city with a population of 20,493 according to the 2020 census, founded by settler Addison J. Comstock on June 18, 1826. The city is located in southern Michigan, surrounded by forests and farmland. The railroad tracks here run through typical regional terrain — gravel embankments, deciduous forests, and crossings over local roads.
ADBF is also known for operating the dinner train "The Old Road Dinner Train" in Blissfield — a tourist project on a segment of the same historic line.
Technical Features of the Crossing
The railroad crossing captured in the webcam frame is equipped with standard signaling for such locations: a crossbuck signal mast with a red signal light. The tracks are laid with gravel ballast, characteristic of short line railroads — Class III short lines where traffic intensity is lower than on Class I main lines. Nevertheless, freight trains pass regularly, providing service between Adrian and Riga.
