Mr. Brown Avenue and Duoliang Station in Zhishan — Live Traffic Webcam
Mr. Brown Avenue: A Road Through Rice Fields
Mr. Brown Avenue is one of the most recognizable roads in eastern Taiwan. This two-kilometer stretch of asphalt runs through the endless rice fields of Zhishan Township in Taitung County, creating the iconic shot that has become the region's calling card. The avenue is 2.2 kilometers long, and along its entire length there are no power poles or houses — just a smooth strip of asphalt framed by trees and farmland.
The road's name comes from a Mr. Brown coffee commercial filmed here in the late 1980s. Later, Mr. Brown Avenue served as the filming location for an EVA Air commercial featuring Takeshi Kaneshiro. Since then, this road has become a must-visit stop on tourist routes through Taitung.
Duoliung Station: Abandoned Beauty of the South Link Line
Duoliang Station is a former railway stop on Taiwan's South Link Line. It opened on October 28, 1992 and operated for less than a decade and a half. On October 1, 2006, the station was closed due to low passenger traffic, and the tracks connecting the platform to the main line were dismantled.
Despite its closure, Duoliang Station has retained its status as Taiwan's most beautiful station. It rises on steel supports, offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, mountains, and the curves of the railway line. On March 31, 2019, the site was closed for modernization, but the pedestrian bridge and platform remain accessible to tourists.
Road Infrastructure of the Zhishan Area
Mr. Brown Avenue begins at the intersection of Highway 197 and Dong 6 Road. You can reach it by departing from Zhishan Station and heading south along Route 197. Along this highway and in the vicinity of the avenue, there are shops where tourists rent bicycles and e-bikes to explore the area.
The road network of Zhishan is typical of rural Taitung Valley: straight stretches with a minimal number of intersections, no traffic lights on the main routes. The surface is high-quality asphalt, regularly maintained by local road services. Traffic intensity is low, with the main flow consisting of tourist and agricultural vehicles.
Landscape of the Taitung Rift Valley
Zhishan Township is located in a unique geological zone — the Taitung Rift Valley, which stretches between Taiwan's Central Mountain Range to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. This creates a characteristic coastal-mountain landscape: emerald rice fields transition into hilly mountains, and the spurs of mountain ranges are visible on the horizon.
The agricultural cycle determines the valley's appearance. In the Zhishan area, two rice harvests are gathered per year. During the ripening period, the fields turn golden-yellow, and after planting, they become bright green. The mountain range in the background remains a constant landmark throughout the year.
Transport Significance of the Site
Mr. Brown Avenue and Duoliang Station represent different eras of Taiwan's transport infrastructure. The avenue is a typical rural road built for agricultural needs that became a tourist attraction. Duoliang Station is an example of early 1990s railway infrastructure, when the South Link Line was laid through inaccessible coastal-mountain areas.
Today, the main traffic flow in the Zhishan area consists of tourists in cars and on bicycles, as well as trucks transporting rice from the fields. Rail service is provided through Zhishan Station, located north of Mr. Brown Avenue.
