Osaka's Main Transport Artery
Midosuji Street is Osaka's central thoroughfare, stretching 4 kilometers between the Umeda and Namba districts. However, its northern extension — Shin-Midosuji (新御堂筋) — is an entirely different type of road. This is no longer an urban boulevard but an elevated expressway with National Route 423 status.
Shin-Midosuji is a high-grade elevated highway (高架道路) with 2–3 lanes in each direction. The roadway width is 95 meters, making it the second-widest ordinary national highway in Japan. Traffic here is intense: cars, minivans, trucks, and motorcycles move in multiple directions simultaneously.
History of the Expressway Construction
Construction of the Shin-Midosuji section across the Yodogawa River — the Shin-Yodogawa Bridge — was completed in 1969. Full traffic along the entire route from Osaka through Senri New Town to the city of Minoh was opened by 1970 — just before the Osaka World Expo (大阪万博). This was a large-scale infrastructure project designed to connect the city center with the northern suburbs.
The 16 km stretch has not a single traffic light, ensuring uninterrupted traffic from central Osaka (Umeda) to the northern suburb of Minoh. The absence of traffic lights and multi-level interchanges make Shin-Midosuji one of the most efficient transport arteries in the Kansai region.
