History of Tokyo's Main Air Gateway
Narita Airport is one of the two largest airports in the Japanese capital, handling the bulk of international flights in the region. Three Terminals: Who Is Served Where
The infrastructure of Narita Airport includes three passenger terminals, each specializing in specific carriers and alliances. Terminal 1 is divided into North and South wings, connected by a central building. Carriers from the Star Alliance and SkyTeam alliances are based here — ANA, United Airlines, Air France, Korean Air, and others.
Terminal 2 serves Oneworld alliance airlines, including Japan Airlines, British Airways, and American Airlines. This is where most flights to Europe and North America depart from. The terminal is connected by an underground passage to the Airport Terminal 2 railway station.
Terminal 3 opened on April 8, 2015 and is entirely dedicated to low-cost carriers — Jetstar Japan, Vanilla Air, and budget Asian airlines. It is located 500 meters north of Terminal 2 and has no jet bridges — passengers reach aircraft by bus or on foot. Free shuttle buses run between terminals, with travel time between T2 and T3 taking 3 to 6 minutes depending on direction.
Runways and Taxiway Network
Narita Airport has two runways: 16L/34R and 16R/34L. The main runway is approximately 2,180 meters long, which limits the acceptance of some heavy wide-body aircraft under certain weather conditions. This is why active discussions are underway about extending the second runway to 2,500 meters and constructing a third runway measuring 3,200 meters in length and 60 meters in width.
The taxiways form an extensive network connecting both runways with the apron areas of all three terminals. During peak hours, a dense flow of aircraft can be observed on the taxiways — holding points near the runways are often filled with planes waiting for takeoff clearance. Ground equipment — tugs, catering trucks, fuel tankers — constantly shuttles between the apron and the technical zone.
How to Reach Tokyo: Trains and Buses
The transport accessibility of Narita Airport is among the best among Asian hubs. Rail service operates on three main lines: Narita Sky Access line (fast route to Ueno), Keisei line with Skyliner trains (speeds up to 160 km/h), and JR Narita Express (N'EX), running to Tokyo, Shinjuku, Yokohama, and other major stations.
The Keisei line stretches 51.4 km from Keisei-Takasago Station to Narita Airport Station. Keisei AE Skyliner trains cover this distance in approximately 41 minutes. JR Narita Express connects the airport with central Tokyo in about 53 minutes. From Terminal 1, passengers access Narita Airport Station; from Terminals 2 and 3 — Airport Terminal 2 Station.
Bus service is represented by routes numbered 16 (to Terminal 1), 25, 26, 27, 31B, 32, 33 (to Terminal 2, 3F). Additionally, Airport Limousine Bus and Express Bus operate, departing every 60 minutes and running until 21:59. Travel time to central Tokyo ranges from 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic on expressways.
Plane Spotting in Narita: Best Observation Points
Narita Airport has long become a pilgrimage site for aviation enthusiasts from around the world. The observation deck on the roof of Terminal 1 is a classic spotting location, offering a panoramic view of both runways and apron areas.
