Where is Perdido Key — geography and location

Perdido Key is a barrier island about 16 miles (26 km) long, located in Escambia County, Florida, between Pensacola and Orange Beach (Alabama). The island stretches along the Gulf of Mexico coast and separates Perdido Bay from the open ocean. This place attracts tourists with pristine beaches and wildlife.

Island history — from the Spanish to the present day

The name Perdido Key translates from Spanish as "lost key". The island was discovered by early Spaniards in 1693, although before that it was a well-kept secret of the local Indians of the Gulf Coast. For centuries, the island remained sparsely populated, preserving its pristine beauty.

Nature and wildlife — endemics and sanctuaries

Perdido Key is known for its endemic species — the Perdido Key beach mouse (Peromyscus polionotus trissyllepsis), which is found only on this island. This subspecies of oldfield mouse is listed as endangered and inhabits the dunes, leading a nocturnal lifestyle. The island is also home to bald eagles, ospreys, herons, sea turtles and many migratory birds. Perdido Key is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail.

Beaches and parks — main attractions

Almost 60% of Perdido Key island (9.5 miles out of 16) is protected in federal or state parks. In 1978, the National Park Service acquired more than 1,000 acres of land on the island. Perdido Key State Park is a 247-acre park with pristine dunes and extensive white sand beaches, offering picnic pavilions, restrooms, parking and free beach wheelchairs.

Before the state park was established in 1980, this area was used as a military base (Gulf Beach Gunnery Range) until 1954, when the land was declared surplus and sold at auction by the Navy.

Johnson Beach — the jewel of the national seashore

Johnson Beach is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, which is the longest stretch of federally protected coastline in the USA. The beach offers miles of boundless views and opportunities for solitude. It is also the primary habitat of the Perdido Key beach mouse and the location of historic coastal batteries that operated during World War I and World War II.

The beach is equipped with two large picnic pavilions, six outdoor grills, showers, parking and a boat ramp. There are hiking trails through oak groves and natural habitats. Perdido Key webcams allow you to see this beauty in real time without leaving home.

Things to do on the island — active recreation

Perdido Key offers many opportunities for active recreation: swimming, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking and dolphin watching. The island is ideal for family vacations and those seeking solitude with nature. Local tour operators offer bay excursions and deep-sea fishing.

Climate and best time to visit

The climate on Perdido Key is subtropical, with mild winters and warm summers. The water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico allows swimming for most of the year. Hurricane season lasts from June to November, so during this period it is worth monitoring weather forecasts. Online broadcasts from cameras on the island help assess current conditions before traveling.
