History of Manhattan Beach: From Plantations to an Elite Resort

Manhattan Beach is one of the most prestigious coastal cities in Southern California, located in Los Angeles County. Its history began in 1902, when developer Stewart Merrill named the settlement after the borough of Manhattan in New York. The word "Beach" was added to the name in 1927 at the request of the postmaster to emphasize the coastal character of the settlement.

One of the city's founders — George H. Peck (1856–1940) — rejected the practice of racial segregation when founding Manhattan Beach, which was unusual for that time in California. The city was officially incorporated as a municipality on December 7, 1912. Today it is a compact town of 3.9 square miles with a population of 35,506 according to the 2020 census, known for its wide sandy beaches and high standard of living.

Manhattan Beach Pier and Roundhouse Aquarium

The city's main landmark is the Manhattan Beach Pier, built in 1920 and the oldest concrete pier on the West Coast of the United States. It was designed by architect A.L. Harris in 1916 to replace the old "Iron Pier," destroyed by a storm in 1913. The pier is 928 feet (about 283 meters) long and is located at the end of Manhattan Beach Boulevard.

At the end of the pier stands the iconic octagonal Mediterranean-style building — Roundhouse Aquarium, completed on July 4, 1922. The pier itself was officially opened on July 5, 1920, but without the Roundhouse, whose construction was completed later. Today the aquarium attracts tourists and locals, and the pier offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains.

Surfing and Beaches: El Porto and the Main Beach

Manhattan Beach is a true mecca for surfers. The northern part of the beach, known as El Porto, is considered one of the most consistent surf breaks in Southern California. This area stretches from 38th Street to 45th Street and is protected by a system of state parks. There are parking lots, restrooms, showers, and snack bars, making it convenient for visitors.

Surfers are usually seen under the Manhattan Beach Pier, making this a popular spot for watching surfing. The city's main beach is a wide strip of golden sand, surrounded by palm trees and California-style beach houses. Manhattan Beach webcams allow you to see surfers in action and assess wave conditions in real time.

The Strand: Coastal Bike Trail

The Strand is a 22-mile (35 km) paved bike route, also known as the Marvin Braude Bike Trail or South Bay Bicycle Trail. It runs along the coastline of Santa Monica Bay in Los Angeles County, offering breathtaking ocean views and beach access.

For Manhattan Beach residents and visitors, The Strand is not just a path but a lifestyle. People jog, bike, skateboard, and rollerblade here, or simply stroll with views of the Pacific Ocean. The trail connects Manhattan Beach with neighboring cities — Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach — making it an ideal route for long walks.

Marine Avenue Park: Sports and Recreation

Marine Avenue Park is the largest city park in Manhattan Beach, located at 1625 Marine Ave. This multi-purpose space includes lit basketball courts, a full-size baseball field, and a soccer field with artificial turf. The park also has a squash/racquetball hall and a small recreation center building.

Special attention deserves the skate park, added in 2017 after 16 years of disputes over its location. It has now become a popular spot for local skaters. Marine Avenue Park also features an exercise area, picnic tables, and playgrounds, making it an ideal place for family recreation.

Climate and Atmosphere of a Coastal City

Manhattan Beach is famous for its Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm summers. The Pacific Ocean moderates the temperature, making the city comfortable to live in year-round. Morning fogs, known as "June Gloom," usually clear by noon, revealing the clear California sky.

The atmosphere of Manhattan Beach is a combination of relaxed beach style and refined California. On the main streets — Highland Avenue and Manhattan Beach Boulevard — there are boutiques, restaurants, and cafes. In the evening, the city lights up, and sunsets over the ocean attract photographers and romantics.
