Yagodnoye is an urban-type settlement and the administrative center of Yagodninsky Municipal District in Magadan Oblast. It is a place where the history of Kolyma gold mining intertwines with the harsh nature of the Russian Far East. The settlement was founded in 1934 in connection with the construction of the Kolyma Highway — the legendary "Road of Bones." The district mining administration was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in 1953 for achievements in gold mining.
Today, Yagodnoye is one of those Kolyma settlements where you can see the true way of life of a northern settlement. Nature surrounds the village on all sides: hills, larches, birches, and poplars protect it from the piercing winds.
Origin of the name: a berry-filled stream
The name Yagodnoye comes from Yagodny Stream — a left tributary of the Debina River. The Yakut name for the stream is "Diolinaakh", which translates as "Happy." The stream first appeared on route maps as early as in 1929.
In 1932, a geological party led by Leonid Avenirovich Snatkov carried out the first sampling of the stream. The geologists were amazed by the abundance of blueberries in the valley of what was then still a nameless stream. The name "Yagodny" arose naturally — it literally meant "a place rich in berries." The foothills of the mountains were covered with dense taiga where blueberries, two species of currants, raspberries, and bilberries grew in summer.
Dalstroy and the Kolyma Highway
The emergence of Yagodnoye is inseparably linked with the activities of Dalstroy — a production association established on November 11, 1931 by a decree of the Central Committee of the VKP(b) "On Kolyma" signed by Stalin. Dalstroy was created "for the development of gold mining in the upper reaches of the Kolyma."
Road surveyors came to these places in 1935. An experienced Kolyma road builder, N.E. Gasselgren, was appointed head of the settlement's construction. A camp of builders was located in the settlement, who built the Kolyma Highway and the settlement itself. By the late 1950s, the camp was disbanded, prisoners and military personnel left behind only memorial place names on the map.
Gold mining: figures and facts
The development of the gold-rich territory began from the neighboring settlement of Kharynakh — from there geological exploration parties set out in the second half of the 1930s. In 1957, the minimum gold production was 9 tons, and by 1974 it had grown to 15 tons. The annual gold production level in the area stabilized at 10.5–11.5 tons.
Yagodninsky District became one of the key centers of Kolyma gold mining, making a significant contribution to the history of the development of this harsh region.
Climate and nature of Yagodnoye
Yagodnoye is located on Yagodny Stream, protected by hills on all sides. The settlement is surrounded by untouched larches, birches, and poplars. The local nature has preserved its pristine appearance — dense taiga, mountain streams, rich in berries.
Here you can see the typical landscape of the Kolyma Upland: hills covered with larch forests and river valleys where wild vegetation blooms in summer.
Shalamov and literary memory
In 1943, the renowned writer Varlam Shalamov was sentenced in Yagodnoye — one of the leading representatives of the "camp theme" in Russian literature. His "Kolyma Stories" became one of the most honest testimonies of the Dalstroy era.
This fact adds special cultural significance to Yagodnoye — the settlement is connected to the history of 20th-century literature.
What the settlement looks like today
Today, Yagodnoye is a quiet northern settlement where life flows at a measured pace. In the center, you can see typical Soviet-era buildings, and on the outskirts — private houses surrounded by taiga. The atmosphere here is special: a feeling of the edge of the earth, where people live in close proximity to the wild nature.
