Picturesque Pomor village in the north of Arkhangelsk Oblast

Verkhnyaya Toyma is located on the right bank of the Northern Dvina at the confluence of the Toyma River. This is an ancient Pomor village with a unique history and architecture. A picturesque view opens up here of the wide riverbed, where the calm water reflects the coastal forests. People choose cameras to observe the nature and peaceful life of this corner of Arkhangelsk Oblast from anywhere in the world. The streets of the ancient settlement seem frozen in the past, preserving the traditions of Old Believers and the Pomor way of life that continue to live here to this day.

Historical roots of the settlement

The first written mentions of Verkhnyaya Toyma date back to 1137, when this place on the banks of the Northern Dvina was mentioned in the Charter of Prince Svyatopolk Mstislavich. At that time, the settlement served as an important point on the route between the lands of Rus and the Pomor region. Cameras help modern observers immerse themselves in the atmosphere of bygone eras, tracing the evolution of urban development from wooden buildings to current structures. The history of the village is inextricably linked with life on the great northern river, where a unique Pomor culture was formed over the centuries.

The distance from Arkhangelsk to Verkhnyaya Toyma by road is about 440 kilometers. The route runs along the federal highway M8 to the turnoff to the Bereznik-Kotlas road, then follows the left bank of the Dvina to the ferry crossing, after which it reaches the right bank. From Kotlas to Verkhnyaya Toyma, travelers continue along the left bank, crossing the river by ferry. This route requires patience and attention on unpaved sections, especially after rain, when roads become rutted and dusty. Cameras allow you to assess the condition of the terrain in advance and prepare for the trip.

The only route to the right bank of the Northern Dvina

The Verkhnyaya Toyma – Priozerny ferry crossing is the only transport route to the right bank of the Northern Dvina for motorists. In summer, the crossing is operated by ferry, and in winter, under favorable weather conditions, an ice crossing is used instead. This unique connection links the settlement with the outside world and neighboring villages on the left bank of the river. People are accustomed to planning their lives around the ferry schedule, as any changes in the timetable can delay their travel.

Architectural appearance and churches of the village

Several churches of different construction periods have been preserved in the village, each telling its own story. The stone Trinity Church (Verkhnetoemsky Trinity Church) was consecrated in 1783 and has several chapels: in the name of St. Nicholas, consecrated in 1870, and a chapel church in the name of the Apostles Peter and Paul, consecrated in 1873. A little later, in 1808, a stone church in the name of the Epiphany of the Lord was built, originally wooden, to which a 59-meter bell tower was later added, connected to the church by a covered gallery passage. In 1997, a new church in the name of Saint George the Victorious was consecrated, which appeared after nearly forty years when there was no active church in the village during the Soviet period.

Travelers arriving in Verkhnyaya Toyma often begin their sightseeing with the church complex. The Verkhnetoemsky Local History Museum, opened on May 9, 1985 on the basis of a room of military and labor glory of war and labor veterans, tells the life of the settlement from its founding to the present day. The exhibits include items of traditional peasant life and collections of bone-carving art. The museum has become a center for preserving the traditions of the Pomor people, maintaining many rituals and crafts that are collected piece by piece throughout the Arkhangelsk region.

Embankment and modern changes

The embankment of Verkhnyaya Toyma has become a gathering place for local residents and guests of the village. In recent years, comprehensive improvement from 2023 to 2025 under the federal project 'Formation of a comfortable urban environment' has made the embankment modern and convenient. Wooden and asphalt sidewalks, pedestrian paths, and viewing platforms with railings have appeared on the territory so that visitors can safely enjoy the view of the Northern Dvina. In the evening, meetings are often held here and people admire the sunsets over the river, which become a real spectacle thanks to the calm waves and forested banks. Cameras at various points along the embankment show how the lighting and mood of the banks change depending on the time of day.

Military memory and cultural heritage

On Central Square, on Kirov Street, there is a monument to fellow villagers who fell during the Great Patriotic War. The monument was opened in 1989 and reminds of the feat of local residents who gave their lives for the liberation of the Motherland. The churches, museum, and monument form a single cultural complex of Verkhnyaya Toyma, which attracts researchers and tourists from all over the country. Cameras help remote visitors study the architectural style of local churches and surroundings, observing changes in the appearance of buildings through different seasons.
