History of Nizhny Tagil: From Factories to Legends

A place in the Urals where the industrial revolution began, it received city status in 1722, when the Vysky Plant produced its first output — cast iron. The founder was a Russian entrepreneur from the Demidov dynasty, Akinfiy Nikitich Demidov (1678–1745), whom Peter I authorized in 1702 to build his own plants. In 1720, the Vysky copper-smelting and Nizhny Tagil ironworks were established, laying the industrial foundation of the region.

The Demidov dynasty made an invaluable contribution to the development of the Urals and Siberia, transforming remote lands into a powerful industrial hub. This legacy still shapes the city's character and economy.

Lis'ya Mountain — The Heart and Symbol of the City

On panoramic video from cameras in the city center, you can see Lysaya Mountain, nicknamed the "volcano standing on end," aged 340–360 million years. It is one of the main symbols, invariably featured on postcards, calendars, and artworks about the city. At the summit stood a watchtower museum — a small but truly memorable landmark with a panoramic view of Nizhny Tagil.

Locals traditionally called the mountain Lysaya, until the name "Lis'ya" (Fox Mountain) became established after zealous researchers got confused with the translations. Around the tower unfold stories of underground labyrinths, Demidov treasures, and the romantic tragedy of Nikolai Demidov and Elizaveta Stroganova.

Tankograd: Contribution to the Great Victory

During the Great Patriotic War, Nizhny Tagil became a true forge of armored vehicles. The city's industry produced T-34 tanks — every third tank proudly bore the hometown brand. For this contribution to the Victory, the city received the unofficial title of "Tankograd. Production facilities supplied the front with reliable armor, and military chronicles captured by cameras in workshops and garages remind us of this glorious period in the city's history.

Unique People and Events

The city's history is closely tied to remarkable personalities and rare events. In 1939, letters from the Karamzin family from 1836–1837 were discovered here, describing the last days of A.S. Pushkin's life, making the city a special destination for literary tourists. Another notable figure is the serf and inventor Yefim Artamonov — creator of the world's first bicycle with pedals and handlebars, whose intellectual courage, despite the conditions of serfdom, materialized in designs ahead of their time.

The Living Atmosphere of Streets and Squares

The city flows with its everyday and festive life. Residents move along highways and streets by private and public transport; the city can be reached from Moscow and Sverdlovsk. Wind, snow, and rain alternately transform the appearance of the streets, and the camera near Demidov Plaza helps observe the rhythm of urban life. The city's proximity makes Nizhny Tagil a living organism, where every street and avenue holds its own history and energy.

Nature and Recreation

For those who prefer nature and tranquility, parks and gardens are open around the city. In spring, trees bloom, filling the air with the scent of flowering linden and maple, and in autumn transforming the city into a colorful canvas of golden and crimson hues. Studying the city's panorama from a bird's-eye view reveals a combination of industrial panels, green plantings, and skyscrapers, symbolizing the balance between industry and greenery.

Atmosphere and the City's Spirit

Nizhny Tagil breathes industrial success and cultural heritage. The Neva River valley, the railway, and city parks form a unified system dominated by gray industrial arrays and red roofs of factory buildings. Cameras capture the city's life in detail: from traffic jams at the station to twilight over the Ural heights, creating a living panorama of the area.
