History of Krasnaya Polyana: from a Circassian aul to the Olympic capital

The place where one of the country's most famous mountain resorts now stands has a deep and complex history. Until the mid-19th century, there was a Circassian aul Kbaade — the largest in the Mzymta Valley. After the Caucasus War, settlers began to populate these lands, and in 1878 a new settlement appeared. Krasnaya Polyana changed its name several times — it was called the village of Romanovskoye and even the town of Romanovsk, before reclaiming its historical name. Today, this place attracts tourists from all over Russia, and Krasnaya Polyana webcams allow you to see its beauty in real time without leaving home.

Why Krasnaya Polyana is called that: legends and facts

The origin of the name still causes debate among local historians. According to one version, the name appeared thanks to Greek settlers in 1878, who were amazed by the beauty of the autumn landscapes — local maples and ferns turned bright red and brown. According to another version, "Krasnaya" simply means "beautiful, attractive" — so the glade was named after the blushing sumac and bracken fern. Be that as it may, the name is fully justified by the surrounding landscapes, especially in the autumn months when the mountain slopes are covered with a crimson-golden carpet.

Climate and nature: subtropics in the mountains

Krasnaya Polyana is one of the wettest resorts in Russia, due to its unique geographical location. The climate here is transitional from temperate to subtropical, with mild winters and heavy rainfall throughout the year. At the same time, there is a sharp temperature difference by altitude: at the bottom, at 540 m, it can rain at +5 °C, while simultaneously at 2000–2300 m there will be a blizzard and -10 °C. Thanks to the special microclimate, capricious subtropical plants take root in Krasnaya Polyana: cypresses, Himalayan cedars, magnolias, camellias, thujas, palms, and cherry laurels. This creates an amazing contrast — mountain peaks with snow caps coexist with evergreen vegetation in the valley.

Attractions and Olympic legacy

The resort is famous not only for its ski runs but also for many interesting places. The main attractions include: Olympic Park with the Singing Fountain, Vorontsov Caves, Orekhovsky Waterfall, Krasnaya Polyana dolmen, and the "Krugozor Yefremova" observation deck. In February 2014, the Rosa Khutor ski center became the venue for XXII Winter Olympic Games competitions in alpine skiing, snowboarding, and freestyle. The Olympic legacy still defines the resort's appearance — modern lifts, world-class runs, and sports infrastructure attract both professionals and outdoor enthusiasts.

Ski resorts and altitude records

Krasnaya Polyana is one of the highest mountain resorts in Russia: its facilities are located at altitudes from 540 to 2500 m above sea level. At the same time, it is the only ski resort located so close to the sea coast: the distance to the Black Sea is about 39–43 km. The ski season here lasts from November to June, which is one of the longest in the country. Three main ski complexes — Rosa Khutor, Gazprom, and Krasnaya Polyana — offer runs of varying difficulty, from green for beginners to black for experienced riders.

Krasnaya Polyana as a place to live and relax

Despite being one of the most expensive settlements in Russia, Krasnaya Polyana remains an attractive destination for tourists year-round. According to official data, just over 5,000 people live here, but during the high season, the population increases many times over due to visitors. In summer, the resort becomes a center for hiking and ecotourism — numerous trails lead to waterfalls, caves, and observation decks with panoramic views of the Main Caucasus Range. In winter, the main entertainment is skiing and snowboarding on the slopes that still remember the Olympic spirit of 2014.
