Kimry — Merchant History on the Volga Bank

Kimry is a town in Tver Oblast, situated on the right bank of the Volga River where the Kimrka River flows into it. It is one of those Russian cities where history literally emerges on the facades of buildings — from Art Nouveau of the early 20th century to merchant mansions that remember the heyday of the shoe trade. The city was first mentioned in written sources in the 16th century and received town status in 1917. Today, Kimry has about 45,000 residents, a picturesque Volga embankment, and the atmosphere of a provincial merchant center that you can experience by watching Kimry webcams online at any time of day.

The city's geographical position is unique: it stands on the high right bank of the Volga, and the embankment offers views of the river's expanses. This is why Kimry webcams often capture Volga landscapes — one of the city's main natural symbols.

Fadeyeva Embankment — The City's Facade to the Volga

Fadeyeva Embankment is one of the oldest streets in Kimry, formerly simply called the Embankment, renamed Proletarskaya after the 1917 revolution, and since the 1960s named after the writer Alexander Alexandrovich Fadeyev, a native of Kimry (born here in 1901). This street is the city's calling card, its facade faces the Volga, and most of the historic buildings are concentrated here.

On the Volga embankment (house No. 10) stands an Art Nouveau masterpiece — the house of merchant Ivan Vasilyevich Rybkin, built in 1913. This building is one of the finest examples of Art Nouveau architecture in Tver Oblast, with characteristic flowing lines, stucco decoration, and large windows. Nearby are other merchant houses that form the unique appearance of the embankment.

Fadeyeva Embankment is a popular walking spot among residents and visitors. It offers a panorama of the Volga, and this view is most often captured by street cameras.

Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral — Architectural Dominant

Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral is the main Orthodox church in Kimry and one of the largest in Tver Oblast. It was built in 1902–1911 to a design by architect Fyodor Rybinsky, accommodating up to 1,000 people. The cathedral rises above the urban development and serves as a landmark — its domes are visible from the embankment and many points in the historic center.

The cathedral's architecture is in the Russian-Byzantine style with Art Nouveau elements, characteristic of church architecture at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. The church survived the Soviet period, was closed, and later returned to the faithful. Today, the Transfiguration Cathedral is an active church and one of the key landmarks that can be seen when watching the city of Kimry through webcams aimed at the center.

Shoe Capital of Russia — Industrial Heritage

Kimry long held the unofficial title of Russia's "shoe capital." The first mechanical shoe factory "Yakor" (Anchor) was built in 1903–1907, with March 1, 1907 being the founding date of the enterprise (first products released). In 1923, the factory was named "Krasnaya Zvezda" (Red Star).

The scale of production is impressive: in its first year, the "Yakor" factory produced 20,000 pairs of shoes; by 1910, production reached 80,000 pairs, and by 1913, the enterprise employed 286 people. The Kimry district produced about 15–20% of all shoes in Russia. The shoe craft determined the city's economic flourishing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and shaped a special way of life for local residents.

Today, shoe production in Kimry continues, although it no longer holds the dominant position it did a century ago. Nevertheless, the legacy of the shoe capital is felt in the city's appearance — former factory buildings, homes of craftsmen and shoe merchants form the historic environment.

Kirov Street — Art Nouveau and Wooden Architecture

Kirov Street in Kimry has preserved historic buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the Art Nouveau style. The Serepyev House (23 Kirov Street) is a wooden house built in 1910, four years older than its stone Art Nouveau neighbor to the right. It is a rare example of a preserved wooden merchant house in a provincial town.

Another gem of Kirov Street is the Luzhin brothers' house-teremok, mentioned as one of Kimry's main landmarks. It is a striking example of decorative wooden architecture, adorned with carvings and characteristic Art Nouveau elements.

Kirov Street is a pedestrian zone in the historic center, where museums, cafes, and administrative buildings are concentrated. A walk along it allows you to feel the atmosphere of merchant Kimry at the beginning of the last century.

Kimry Local History Museum — Keeper of History

The Kimry Local History Museum was founded in 1918, with over 50,000 items in its collections, introducing visitors to the history of the region from ancient times to the present day. The archaeological collection contains Stone Age finds, evidence of the most ancient settlement of these places.

The museum is located at 13/8 Kirov Street and is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 (closed on Mondays). It is a branch of the Tver State United Museum. The exhibition covers archaeology, the history of the shoe craft, the life of merchant families, and events of the 20th century. For those interested in the city's past, the museum is a must-visit.

Goritsky Resurrection Monastery — Ancient Abode

The Goritsky Resurrection Convent was founded, probably in the early 14th century under Ivan Kalita, and in 1382 it was ravaged by the troops of Khan Tokhtamysh. The monastery is located in the village of Goritsy near Kimry and is one of the oldest spiritual centers of the Upper Volga region.

The monastery was repeatedly destroyed and restored. During the Soviet period, the monastery was closed, and its buildings were used for economic purposes. Today, restoration work is underway, and the monastery complex is of interest as an architectural and historical monument.

Savyolovo Station — The City's Railway Gateway

Savyolovo Station is a railway station of the October Railway, located on the right bank of the Volga River, on the Moscow–Sonkovo line. The station marks the end of the direct current electrified section from Moscow to Savyolovo. Kimry is among the few Russian cities where the railway station is located several kilometers from the settlement — near the village of Savyolovo, after which it is named. Moscow's Savyolovsky Station also bears the name of this village.

This feature is one of the city's legends and a constant topic of discussion among residents. The railway connection links Kimry with Moscow and St. Petersburg, making the city accessible to tourists. Savyolovo Station is the first point of impression for most visitors.
