History of Gorodishche: from a Burtas outpost to a district center

Gorodishche is a district center of Penza Region, whose name itself points to a deep history. The first settlement at this site presumably appeared in the second half of the 16th century, and by 1680 a sloboda already existed here. In 1780, Gorodishche was granted the status of a district center of the Penzenskoye Viceroyalty and received its own coat of arms. Since 1928, the city became the center of Gorodishchensky District of Kuznetsk Okrug of the Middle Volga Region, and since 1939 it has been part of modern Penza Region. Today, Gorodishche webcams allow you to see what this ancient city looks like today, having preserved the features of a district center.

Why the city is called Gorodishche

The city's name literally means a place where a city once stood and its remains — a rampart and a moat — have been preserved. The ancient Burtas gorodishche with an arc-shaped rampart and moat up to 350 sazhens long gave its name to the modern settlement. Until the 13th century, this ancient city served as the western outpost of Volga Bulgaria and the capital of the Burtas Principality. Archaeological excavations in these places continue to uncover new pages of the region's history, and finds enrich the collections of the local museum.

Geographical location and nature

Gorodishche is located on the right bank of the Kichkileyka River, 48½ versts from Penza. The urban settlement of "Gorodishche city" is the only settlement in its municipal formation. The district is distinguished by diverse landscapes — here you can observe both flat spaces and picturesque river valleys. The nature of these places attracts lovers of quiet recreation and walking. The Kichkileyka River creates a special microclimate in the city, and its banks serve as a resting place for residents and guests of Gorodishche.

Yulovskoye Gorodishche — a federal archaeological monument

In Gorodishche there is the Yulovskoye Gorodishche — the first archaeological monument in Penza Region to have the status of a federal heritage site. This place attracts researchers and history enthusiasts who want to touch the ancient past of the region. The monument testifies to the rich history of these lands long before the founding of the modern city. Archaeological research has been conducted here for many decades, and each season brings new discoveries that shed light on the life of the ancient inhabitants of the Volga region.

Local history museum and cultural heritage

In the former parish school there is a local history museum that introduces visitors to Russian, Mordvin, and Tatar traditions. Here you can see household items, documents, and photographs reflecting the life of several generations of the district's residents. Special attention is paid to the traditions and customs of the peoples who have inhabited these lands since ancient times.
