History of Kayaköy: from ancient Karmylissos to a ghost town

Kayaköy is a place where time has stopped. This abandoned village in southwestern Turkey, in the province of Muğla, just 8 km from Fethiye, preserves the memory of several civilizations. The ancient settlement on this site emerged in the 13th century and was called Karmylissos — as it was known in Byzantine chronicles. Later, in the 18th century, a new town grew on the ruins of the ancient settlement — Levissi, which was supposed to become the center of the region.

The impetus for the growth of Levissi was the destruction of the neighboring town of Fethiye as a result of the 1856 earthquake and the 1885 fire. The homeless residents moved to Levissi, and the town began to grow rapidly. By the early 20th century, it was a large settlement with developed infrastructure.

Origin of the name: why "stone village"

The name "Kayaköy" translates from Turkish as "stone village" — from the words kaya (stone) and köy (village). This name fully corresponds to reality: all that remains today of the once flourishing town is stone walls and ruins. The Greek name of the settlement — Levissi — is used less often today, but it was under this name that the town was known for centuries.

The tragedy of 1923: the town that emptied overnight

The heyday of Levissi ended abruptly. After the Greco-Turkish War, a population exchange agreement was signed between Greece and Turkey. In 1923, the Greek population of Kayaköy was deported, and Turkish families from Greece were resettled in their place. However, the new residents did not take root in the stone houses of Levissi and soon left the town. Thus, Kayaköy became a ghost town.

As of 1911, the population of Kayaköy was about 23,000 people, about half of whom were ethnic Greeks. Today, no one lives here permanently — only tourists and researchers come to walk among the ruins.

Attractions of Kayaköy: what your eyes will see

Kayaköy today is an open-air museum where every stone tells its story. On the territory of the abandoned village, the ruins of over 3,500 residential buildings, three churches, a school, a hospital, and remnants of municipal infrastructure have been preserved. Walking through the streets, one can imagine how life was in full swing here just a century ago.

Among the main attractions are two semi-ruined churches, stone houses with preserved facades, ancient fountains, and rock tombs. All this creates an atmosphere that cannot be conveyed in words — it must be seen. And Kayaköy webcams allow you to touch this atmosphere without leaving home.

Lycian Way: a hiking route through the ruins

Sections of the Lycian Way pass through Kayaköy — one of Turkey's most famous hiking routes. This path leads to the popular resort of Ölüdeniz and passes ancient ruins, pine forests, and picturesque mountain landscapes. For tourists who love to combine history and nature, Kayaköy is a must-visit point on the route.

Modern life next to the ruins

Next to the historical ruins, there is a modern village of the same name, where you can grab a bite at local cafes and relax after a walk through the abandoned town. There are also souvenir shops and small stores here. It is a convenient base for those who want to explore Kayaköy without rushing, returning to the ruins again and again.
