History of Hengchun: A Qing Dynasty Fortress on the Edge of the Island

Hengchun is a city where time slows down. Here, at the southernmost tip of Taiwan, history is felt not from textbooks but literally underfoot: the stone slabs of ancient streets still remember the footsteps of Qing dynasty soldiers. Construction of the fortress began in 1875 on the initiative of imperial commissioner Shen Baozhen, when the island needed to strengthen its southern borders. Since then, Hengchun has transformed from a frontier outpost into a cozy town where antiquity coexists with tropical serenity.

What makes Hengchun unique is that it is the only city in Taiwan to have preserved all four tower gates — eastern, western, southern, and northern — as well as a significant portion of the fortress wall. The length of the preserved wall section is about 880 meters. The walls are built of local limestone, the architecture is simple and functional — barracks and supply depots were once located inside. Today you can walk along the wall, looking into the embrasures that offer views of the tiled roofs of old quarters.

Geographical Location and Natural Attractions

Hengchun is located on the eponymous peninsula in Pingtung County and serves as the gateway to Kenting National Park. This park covers 333 square kilometers and is the oldest national park in Taiwan, known for its tropical climate, coral reefs, and white-sand beaches. Mangrove forests grow here, and during the season you can observe butterfly migration.

Eluanbi Cape — the southernmost point of Taiwan — is located in Hengchun. The lighthouse on the cape, built in 1882 after several shipwrecks, still guides ships to this day. Around it is a park with tropical plants and observation decks where you can see the confluence of the Taiwan Strait and the Pacific Ocean. Hengchun webcams allow you to see this panorama without leaving home — the view is especially stunning at sunset, when the water turns shades of coral and gold.

Cultural Traditions and Modern Festivals

The cultural life of Hengchun is striking in its contrasts. On one hand — ancient temples and rituals, on the other — one of the largest music festivals in Asia. Kenting Spring Scream was founded in 1995 by two Americans, Jimmy Moe and Wade Davis, and since then every spring it has gathered thousands of musicians and spectators on the beaches of Kenting. The festival transforms a quiet resort town into the epicenter of rock, electronic music, and the indie scene.

Equally unique is the local "Bat Festival," dedicated to the population of these nocturnal animals inhabiting the limestone caves of the peninsula. Hengchun is also famous for the tradition of launching sky lanterns — this custom came from the mainland and has become part of the local identity. On full moon nights, hundreds of lights rise above the city, creating a magical atmosphere that is hard to forget.

Local Cuisine and Gastronomic Features

Hengchun's cuisine is a celebration of the sea. The freshest shrimp, octopus, swordfish, and exotic shellfish are served at street stalls and restaurants right on the beach. Island exoticism is combined with classic Taiwanese dishes: beef noodle soup, fried rice with pineapple, tofu in sweet and sour sauce. At the Kenting night market, you can try all of this while listening to the sound of the surf.

As souvenirs from Hengchun, people bring back shell products, local teas, dried seafood, pineapple cakes, and traditional Taiwanese snacks. Especially prized is "Dong Ding" tea — it is grown on the slopes of nearby mountains. And they also make unique cactus fruit ice cream here, which is served in small cafes on the waterfront.

Interesting Facts About Hengchun

The name "Hengchun" means "Eternal Spring" — and this is not a metaphor. Thanks to the tropical climate, temperatures here rarely drop below 20°C even in winter. The city is surrounded by hills that protect it from typhoons, and is washed by the sea on three sides. Most of the 2008 film "Cape No. 7" was shot in Kenting National Park and near Hengchun — this film became one of the highest-grossing Taiwanese films and drew the attention of a global audience to the beauty of this region.

Another curious fact: in Hengchun you can still see traditional houses with tiled roofs and inner courtyards, built by mainland immigrants in the 19th century. These quarters are a living open-air museum where grandmothers dry herbs on the doorstep and children play on stone-paved bridges.
