Monte San Salvatore rises more than 900 meters above sea level, and its characteristic peak is visible from almost anywhere in the city. A funicular runs to the top, connecting the lower station in the suburb of Paradiso with the upper station at the very summit. From the summit, there is a panoramic view of the city of Lugano, the lake, and the western part of the Alps. At the very top, there is a restaurant, a church, and a free museum — so the funicular ride becomes a full excursion. From the terrace of Casa Labhardt, Monte San Salvatore appears in profile — as a majestic guardian of the lake shore, against which the suspension cables stretched across the water surface look particularly beautiful.

Canton of Ticino — the Mediterranean in the heart of the Alps

Ticino is the southernmost canton of Switzerland, and its capital Lugano is located between Monte Bre and Monte San Salvatore. Monte Bre has a characteristic conical silhouette, compared to Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio, and offers a 360° panorama with views of Lake Lugano, the Melide Dam, and the Italian Apennines. It is surrounded by pink neoclassical buildings and is the perfect place for an evening aperitif. Nearby is Ciani Park — one of the most beautiful parks on the lake shore, where you can see rare plants and sculptures.

The Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts houses a collection of 19th–20th century Swiss and Italian art. And if you want to see the city from above, take the funicular to the top of San Salvatore or climb Monte Bre — both routes offer completely different but equally breathtaking views of the lake and surroundings.

Weather and climate on Lake Lugano

Thanks to the Mediterranean influence and the protection of the mountains, the climate in Lugano is milder than in other parts of Switzerland. In winter, the temperature rarely drops below zero, and in summer the thermometer can rise above 30°C. The lake softens the heat, creating a comfortable microclimate for walks along the embankment.

In spring and autumn, it is especially beautiful here: cypress trees and palm trees stand out clearly against the backdrop of snow-capped alpine peaks, and the lake takes on a deep emerald hue. On cloudy days, Monte San Salvatore can hide behind clouds, creating a dramatic atmosphere, and after rain, a light mist often appears over the water, giving the landscape a mysterious quality.
