Zaanse Schans — online webcam with a view of the windmills in Zaandam

Zaanse Schans: the living history of the Dutch Zaan region

Zaanse Schans is an open-air museum in the outskirts of Zaandam, where authentic windmills, wooden houses, and workshops from the 17th–18th centuries have been brought together from across the entire Zaanstad region. This place allows you to see what the first industrial zone in Europe looked like — a century ago, hundreds of wind-driven mills operated here. Today, Zaanse Schans remains one of the most visited attractions in the Netherlands, and the online webcam offers a glimpse into this place from anywhere in the world.

The Zaanstad region, where Zaandam is located, is considered the first industrial zone in Europe. In the 17th century, the use of wind energy to power machinery transformed this region into a true industrial center: thousands of mills produced everything from paint and mustard to paper and shipbuilding materials. Zaanse Schans has preserved this unique atmosphere — here you can observe mills of the most varied purposes, from water pumping to sawing timber.

Windmills: the heart of Zaanse Schans

Zaanse Schans is home to 12 operational windmills from the 17th–18th centuries, collected from across the country. These include mills for pumping water, sawing timber, grinding grain, churning butter, and pressing oil — each served a specific function in the regional economy. The mills were relocated to Zaanse Schans from the broader Zaanstad region between 1961 and 1974 to preserve the region's cultural heritage.

The traditional Dutch mills here are dark-colored with orange and green sails — this is the appearance they acquired over centuries of operation. The sails rotate in the wind, driving the internal mechanisms that still operate in demonstration mode today. Visitors can go inside several of the mills and see how the craftsmen of the past worked.

Peter the Great in Zaandam: a historical episode

Zaandam holds a special place in Russian-Dutch relations — it was here that Peter the Great arrived on August 28, 1697 under the name of Peter Mikhailov, a corporal of the Preobrazhensky Regiment, as part of the Grand Embassy of 1697–1698. The young tsar worked as a carpenter at the shipyard, studying shipbuilding and Dutch technologies, settling in a small house on the banks of the Zaan River.

The cottage of Peter the Great has survived to this day and is one of the main attractions of Zaandam. This is a modest wooden structure where the Russian tsar lived for several weeks, mastering the craft of carpentry. Today, the cottage is protected by a stone casing built in the early 20th century to preserve the historical monument.

Traditional crafts of Zaanse Schans

In Zaanse Schans, you can see traditional crafts in 7 workshops dedicated to traditional crafts: cheese making, clog making (wooden shoes), pottery, baking, chocolate production, and oil pressing. Each workshop demonstrates authentic technologies that were used in the Zaanstad region centuries ago.

Of particular interest is the production of clogs — wooden shoes that have become one of the symbols of the Netherlands. Craftsmen carve clogs from poplar or willow using special machines that replicate 18th-century designs. The finished shoes are hand-painted — a traditional process that can be observed right in the workshop.

Architecture and charm of the Zaan region

The wooden buildings of the Zaan region are characterized by green houses — most houses are painted green, which is a tradition of Dutch wooden architecture in this region. Dark wooden facades and tiled roofs create the distinctive look of Zaanse Schans, which is recognizable at first glance.

Historical buildings with dark wooden facades and tiled roofs are characteristic of Dutch architecture from the 17th–18th centuries. Visitors stroll along the paths, creating a lively atmosphere of constant movement. In the background, a canal, green plantings, and modern buildings are visible — the contrast between the past and the present is particularly palpable in this place.

What else to see in Zaandam

In addition to Zaanse Schans, Zaandam offers several interesting attractions. The Zaans Museum tells the story of the Zaanstad region — from a rural area to the industrial center of Europe. It features paintings, household items, and interactive exhibits.

The Cottage of Peter the Great is another must-see. This small wooden house on the banks of the Zaan River became the first refuge of the Russian tsar in the Netherlands. Today, the cottage is a museum and is protected by a stone casing built in 1895 by decree of Russian Emperor Nicholas II.

The center of Zaandam also deserves attention — historic buildings, shops, and restaurants serving traditional Dutch cuisine have been preserved here. The city is compact and pleasant to explore on foot, enjoying the atmosphere of a typical Dutch town.
