The name was given in honor of the Druzhba oil pipeline, which was built near Velikiye Luky in the 1970s–1980s. It was one of the largest pipeline systems in Europe, and its presence in the region left a mark not only on the infrastructure but also in the city's toponymy. Druzhby Street became the first street built in the Severny residential district, which is popularly called "Druzhba".
