Balbi's Arch in Rovinj — Online Webcam
Balbi's Arch — Gateway to Old Rovinj
Balbi's Arch stands on the boundary between the modern town and the ancient Venetian quarter — a stone portal beyond which a labyrinth of cobblestone streets begins. This live webcam shows Marshal Tito Square, where the stone arch with white columns leads to an open square with arcades and Mediterranean-style buildings. The surface is cobblestone, along which tourists and locals walk to the waterfront and back.
History of the Arch — From Medieval Gates to Baroque
Balbi's Arch was built in 1678–1679 by order of the local mayor Daniele Balbi, after whom it was named. It replaced one of the seven medieval city gates that, together with the fortress wall, protected the old town — once an island. Rovinj was connected to the mainland only in 1763, and the arch remained one of three surviving entrances to the historic center.
The Winged Lion of Venice and Two Enemies on the Facade
The arch is crowned with a relief of the winged lion of Saint Mark — the symbol of the Venetian Republic, under whose rule Rovinj remained for more than five centuries. The lion holds an open book in its paws — a sign of the city's peaceful entry into the republic. On the side faces of the arch, two heads are carved: on one side — the head of a Turk, on the other — the head of a Venetian. Such decoration recalls the confrontation between the Ottoman Empire and Venice for control of the Adriatic.
Baroque Architecture in the Heart of Istria
The arch is executed in the Baroque style — ornate white columns, a keystone with heraldic details, characteristic proportions of the second half of the 17th century. The area around the arch is a true open-air architecture museum: Gothic windows, Renaissance facades, Baroque balconies, and neoclassical details coexist within several blocks. The camera captures building facades with closed shutters, flags, and reliefs — typical Mediterranean development of Istria.
Marshal Tito Square — Center of Attraction
Balbi's Arch is located on Marshal Tito Square — the main square of Rovinj on the waterfront. It still bears the name of Josip Broz Tito, despite Croatia having gained independence from Yugoslavia. The square is the place where the stone streets of the old town open up to a view of the sea, and café terraces stretch along the facades. Through the arch, Grisia Street is visible — a narrow cobblestone street leading to the Cathedral of Saint Euphemia.
How to Get to Balbi's Arch
The arch is within walking distance of Rovinj bus station — about 5–7 minutes at a leisurely pace toward the old town. From the ferry terminal, the path is even shorter: Marshal Tito Square is the first thing tourists see when stepping ashore. Nearby are public transport stops and bike rental stations — parked bicycles and electric scooters can always be spotted on the square.
What You Can See on the Camera
The live camera shows Marshal Tito Square with a view of Balbi's Arch. In the foreground — the stone arch with white columns leading to an open square. Beneath the pink-peach building with closed shutters, bicycles and e-bikes are parked. Flags, reliefs, and information plaques are mounted on the facades. Through the arch, another part of the square with arcades and buildings is visible. The surface is cobblestone. In the distance, passersby, city police officers in blue uniforms, and tourists examining signs can be seen. A typical Mediterranean urban landscape with Baroque architectural elements.
