From Finland's Largest Port to a Quiet Village

Reposaari (Swedish: Räfsö, Finnish: Fox Island) has undergone a remarkable transformation. In the second half of the 19th century, it was Finland's largest international port, reaching its peak of development by the 1870s. The country's main exports sailed from here, and the settlement on the island was home to hundreds of sailors and shipbuilders.

The Port of Pori was officially moved to the island in the 1780s, after which full-fledged infrastructure for vessel handling was established here. However, over time, Reposaari's significance as a trading hub declined — cargo operations shifted to the deeper-water harbours of Mantyluoto.

The modern Port of Pori is a comprehensive facility with over 230 years of experience, part of the EU TEN-T transport corridor network. The port comprises three main terminals: Mantyluoto terminal, Tahkoluoto deep harbour, and Tahkoluoto liquid bulk and chemical terminal.

It is Tahkoluoto — Finland's deepest harbour, capable of accommodating large-tonnage vessels. Mantyluoto (Finnish: Pine Reef) gradually took over not only the shipyard but also the main cargo flow from Reposaari, becoming the region's principal maritime gateway.

Kallo Lighthouse — A Landmark in the Bothnian Sea

Near Mantyluoto Island, within the camera's field of view, stands the Kallo Lighthouse (Kallon majakka). The first lighthouse in this area was built as early as 1851 (according to other sources, in 1884), and the current structure was erected in 1903.

The current lighthouse is an octagonal iron tower 9 metres high, designed by architect Gustaf Nyström. A wooden keeper's dwelling has been preserved next to the tower. The lighthouse still serves the shipping lane of the Port of Pori, helping vessels navigate the waters of the Bothnian Bay.

Reposaari is located in the Satakunta region — on the west coast of the Bothnian Bay. This region is rich in historical and natural attractions.
