Nelidovo — a mining town with a military history

Nelidovo is a town in Tver Oblast, known as a center of brown coal mining. But for many, it is above all a place of memory — fierce battles took place here in 1941, and the liberation of the town became one of the key episodes of the Battle of Moscow. Zhukov Square is the central point where this memorialized in monuments and architecture. "Eternal Memory" Memorial Complex

The main feature of the square is the "Eternal Memory" memorial complex, dedicated to the soldiers of 1941–1945. Its construction lasted eleven years: the complex was built from 1984 to 1995 and opened on the 50th anniversary of Victory. In 2024, the memorial underwent a major renovation — a comprehensive repair of the memorial complex was carried out, with updated design elements and restored information stands.

At the entrance to the memorial, three stands are installed that tell about the life of Marshal Georgy Zhukov and the history of the square's creation. On memorial dates, the complex is decorated with Russian flags, and on May 9, solemn events are held here with veterans and residents of the town.

Church of John of Kronstadt

To the right of the memorial, the camera shows an Orthodox church with golden domes and blue elements — this is the Church of John of Kronstadt, the main landmark of Nelidovo. Its construction began in 2002, and today it is an active church located 205 meters from the memorial. The church's golden domes have become the architectural dominant of the square and a recognizable symbol of the town.

The church is active — regular services, sacraments, and festive events are held here. On Orthodox holidays, pilgrims from across the Nelidovo district gather here.

Zhukov Square — the heart of the town

The square is named after Marshal of the Soviet Union Georgy Zhukov — one of the key commanders of the Great Patriotic War. This is not just a transit zone, but a full-fledged public space where the main town infrastructure is concentrated.

How to get to Zhukov Square

Nelidovo is located on the M9 "Baltiya" highway connecting Moscow and Riga. To get to Zhukov Square: you need to turn off the M9 highway toward Nelidovo, drive to a T-intersection, turn left, and after 300 meters you will be at Zhukov Square with the memorial.

The town is connected by rail to Moscow — electric trains run from Belorussky Station. Bus service connects Nelidovo with Tver, Rzhev, and other towns in the region.

What the square looks like in different seasons
