The urban development along the embankment and the greenery on both banks of the river all contribute to the unique character of this Russian Volga town.
The Town's History Through the Camera
Kimry is an ancient town with a rich history. The first mentions date back to the 16th century, when a trade route from Moscow to Arkhangelsk passed through here. The town became a major center of leather and footwear production, which is reflected in its architecture and culture. Kimry residents made footwear for the Russian army, which made the town famous throughout the country.
On the site of the current cathedral once stood a house where the writer Alexander Fadeyev was born in 1901. The Fadeyev Embankment, named in his honor, is located on the banks of the Volga. Here stands the mansion of merchant Ivan Rybkin, built in 1912–1913 in the style of local wooden Art Nouveau. The house has survived to this day and is an architectural monument.
The Large Bridge Across the Volga
The road crosses the river via the Kimry Road Bridge. This bridge is the longest in the Tver region. Its construction began in 1974 and was completed in 1978, with the grand opening taking place on December 15, 1978. Before that, a ferry operated across the Volga, and crossing was a real challenge in bad weather.
In 2005–2007, the bridge underwent a major reconstruction, which increased its capacity and improved traffic safety. Today, buses, cars, and trucks cross the bridge. It has lighting that is visible during the evening and night broadcasts of the webcam.
Attractions on the Embankment
Fadeyev Embankment is the main pedestrian zone of the town, stretching along the Volga. It features many historical buildings and modern restaurants. The Rybkin mansion, with its characteristic elements of wooden Art Nouveau from 1912–1913, serves as an architectural highlight of the embankment. Nearby are the ruins of the Gostiny Dvor and Trading Rows, preserved as fragments of walls.
The embankment is home to the "Pristan" restaurant, which features an open veranda overlooking the water. Here you can enjoy the view of the river, try local cuisine, and order cold drinks. In summer, the embankment hosts festivals, celebrations, and musical events. In winter, you can admire the evening illumination of the bridges and the reflection of lights on the snow.
The Kimry Shoe Museum
The Kimry Museum of Local Lore is located in the historic center of the town. It was founded in October 1918 by the Kimry organization "Kreditsouz." It is the largest shoe museum in Russia, covering the 18th to 20th centuries, making it unique and significant for the town.
The museum's exhibition is dedicated to the history and development of the main local craft — footwear production. The museum began assembling a unique collection of shoes and materials on the history of production from its founding in 1918. The museum features the exhibition "Streets of the Capital of the Shoe Kingdom," where visitors learn about a unique phenomenon — the appearance of elegant Art Nouveau houses in the center of the village, built by Kimry residents who grew rich from supplying footwear to the army. The Rybkin mansion and other buildings are examples of this style.
