Westhavenkade and the Former Island Life

The online webcam takes us to Westhavenkade — the historic harbor of the town of Urk, located on the territory of a former island. From Island to Polder: How Urk Became Part of the Mainland

Urk is first mentioned in historical records of the 10th century — in 966 in a charter of Otto I. For a long time, this was not just a town but a real island in the stormy Zuiderzee. Urk remained an island until 1939, when a dam from the mainland put an end to its island status. The construction of the Afsluitdijk dam (1927–1933) turned the saltwater Zuiderzee surrounding Urk into the freshwater IJsselmeer lake. In the 20th century, Urk's territory was incorporated into the Noordoostpolder. From 1950 to 1986, Urk belonged to the province of Overijssel, and since 1986 — to the youngest province of Flevoland.

Fishing Capital of the Netherlands: Millennia of Tradition

Fishing has been part of the culture and identity of Urk's residents for over 1000 years. The Urkers themselves say "Urk is fish", emphasizing the inseparable connection between the town and the sea. Urk has its own fish auction operating since 1905 — the first in the Zuiderzee. Traditional Urker clothing is still worn on special occasions and during cultural events, such as the Urkerdag festival.

Urkers: A Dialect Like No Other

Urk's isolation as an island over the centuries forged a strong sense of community and unique traditions that residents maintain even after joining the mainland. The local dialect Urkers is one of the oldest and most distinctive dialects of the West Frisian group, spoken by nearly all villagers in everyday life. The Urkers dialect is a blend of Old Dutch, Frisian, English, and Scandinavian influences. Urk has preserved traditions that have largely disappeared in other parts of the modern Netherlands: a strong religious community, a distinctive dialect, and close communal ties.

Westhavenkade: The Heart of the Town Harbor

Westhavenkade is the historic harbor in Urk, a promenade with views of the IJsselmeer lake, Strand Urk beach, and the old port. This is the place where the heart of the town beats. Life is always bustling here: fishermen prepare their gear, yachtsmen set sail, and tourists enjoy walks along the waterfront.
