It was here that King Albert I and the Belgian government were based. The royal family's connection to this place was so strong that the monarch's tragic death occurred in the vicinity of De Panne in 1934 during a solo mountaineering climb. King Albert I fell to his death in the mountains nearby, making this coastal city a place of remembrance for the entire nation.
