Knokke-Heist: the jewel of the Belgian coast

The resort's history began in the mid-19th century when King Leopold II of Belgium built his summer residence here. The Zwin Nature Reserve

In the eastern part of Knokke-Heist lies the Zwin Nature Reserve — a protected area on the North Sea coast, on the border between Belgium and the Netherlands. It covers 1.25 square kilometers (150 hectares) in Belgium and 0.33 sq. km in Sluis, Netherlands.

The Zwin is a former bay formed by tidal currents that in the Middle Ages provided a connection between the city of Bruges and the North Sea. The current nature reserve was established in 1952. Rare marine birds nest and breed here, and the Flanderthin sanctuary is home to more than 400 species of butterflies.

Casino and cultural life

Knokke-Heist is famous not only for its beaches. It is home to the Grand Casino Knokke — the largest of Belgium's ten casinos, known for its permanent large-scale works of art by Keith Haring, René Magritte, and Paul Delvaux. It is the first of four casinos in different Belgian cities designed by Belgian architect Léon Stynen.

The casino was built in 1930 and is a monument of modernist architecture. Inside, one of the halls is adorned with frescoes by René Magritte — eight monumental canvases of incredible size.

How to get to Knokke-Heist

The distance from Bruges to Knokke-Heist is about 19 km in a straight line (approximately 20–25 km by road). A direct train takes 20–30 minutes, making Knokke-Heist an excellent day trip destination from Bruges.

From Ostend, the resort is about 25 km east along the coast. By car, you can reach it via the N34 coastal road, and by public transport — via the Kusttram tram, which runs along the entire Belgian coast.

Seasonality: what changes on the camera

In summer, Knokke-Heist beach is packed — hundreds of umbrellas and sun loungers on the sand, beach bars operating at full capacity, surfers riding the waves. The camera shows a lively scene: people strolling along the promenade, children building sandcastles, kite sails flashing over the water.
