History of Ter Heijde: from naval battle to resort
Ter Heijde is a small village in the province of South Holland, part of the municipality of Westland, located just 6 km southwest of The Hague. Today it is a popular beach resort, but its history is shrouded in dramatic events of the 17th century. The Battle of Ter Heijde, also known as the Battle of Scheveningen, took place on July 31/August 10, 1653 and was the final naval battle of the First Anglo-Dutch War. It was here that the legendary Dutch admiral Maarten Harpertsz Tromp was killed by a sniper during the battle. The family of the tragically deceased commander commissioned Willem van de Velde to create a series of pen drawings depicting the admiral's most famous battles. And the painting Jan Abrahamsz Beerstraaten's "Battle of Terheide" from the Rijksmuseum collection became one of the most famous maritime paintings of the Dutch Golden Age.
Dunes and coastal nature
The resort is surrounded by coastal dunes — a characteristic ecosystem of the Dutch North Sea coast. These dunes are part of an extensive flood protection system that has protected the country from flooding for centuries. The Dutch dune system is considered one of the marvels of hydraulic engineering. The dunes of Ter Heijde are home to typical dune flora: marram grass, sea wormwood, dog rose, and heather. The area includes surrounding landscapes with natural scenery, popular for hiking and cycling routes. 39 cycling routes run through the scenic dunes and along the coastline, offering views of the North Sea and green hills.
Beach and the North Sea
Wide sandy beaches are the main feature of Ter Heijde. It is a sports beach, popular for active recreation and water sports. Surfing is one of the favorite activities on the North Sea coast, attracting both locals and tourists. The beach is described as quiet and peaceful, ideal for family recreation. Water safety is ensured by the KNRM station — the Dutch equivalent of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, which is on duty during the tourist season. The beach resort Punt West is surrounded by beautiful nature and offers a comfortable retreat away from the city bustle.
Active recreation and routes
Ter Heijde is not just a beach, but also a starting point for numerous routes. In addition to 39 cycling trails, the coastal route Kustpad Ter Heijde — Hoek van Holland runs through here, popular among tourists. Walking through the dunes and along the coastline allows you to enjoy fresh sea air and panoramic views. During the tourist season, local festivals and events are held here, enlivening the peaceful atmosphere of the village. For those who prefer comfort, there are cafes and restaurants with sea views.
Attractions and infrastructure
One of the key attractions is the KNRM station, which not only ensures safety but is also a historical site, reminiscent of the maritime past of these places. Near The Hague is the famous Fletcher Hotel-Restaurant Elzenduin, bringing new fame to Ter Heijde as a gastronomic destination. The resort Beach Resort Punt West offers accommodation in a natural setting, making it an ideal place for a peaceful holiday.
