Geographical location and history of Petten
If you want to appreciate the scale of the Dutch coastline, the Petten beach webcam offers a view of endless sands and the rugged waves of the North Sea. This location is situated in the province of North Holland, municipality of Schagen, 15 km northwest of Alkmaar. Historically, Petten was an independent municipality until 1929, then became part of the Zijpe municipality, and since 2013 it has been part of the Schagen municipality. The economy of this region rests firmly on two pillars: agriculture (bulb cultivation) and tourism.
Nature and landscapes: dunes and unique sand
Petten Beach is famous not only for its size but also for the special composition of its sand. Here you can find polished quartz with garnet, which gives the coastline its characteristic hue. The shoreline is protected by powerful sand dunes covered with grassy vegetation. South of Petten, the dunes suffered severe erosion, which led to the construction of the Hondsbossche Zeewering protective dike. For tourists and panoramic view enthusiasts, Petten features a 26-meter-high panoramic dune, from the top of which you can see the North Holland Canal, polders with windmills, and flower fields. Nearby lies the Schoorlse Duinen nature reserve — the highest dunes in the Netherlands.
Surfing and beach recreation
The North Sea off the coast of Petten attracts not only swimmers but also fans of water sports. It is a popular spot for surfing and windsurfing, especially when waves come from the northwest and north. The prevailing southwest winds create excellent surfing conditions, forming stable waves. The beach infrastructure of Petten includes not only the wooden stilt houses visible on the camera but also unique art installations. For yachtsmen, since 1997 there has been a plan to build the Marina Petten yacht harbor with 600 berths. A 40-kilometer tourist route "North Sea Dunes Drive" from Bergen to Den Helder runs through the village. And history enthusiasts will enjoy visiting the museum dedicated to Po Music, the history of Holland, and the Atlantic Wall.
