History of Cox Bay Beach

The modern history of Cox Bay as a tourist destination began in the 1970s. In 1973, the Pettiger family built the Pacific Sands hotel here, which became the first major resort complex on this stretch of coastline. Since then, the beach has evolved into a popular destination for family vacations and surfing.

For decades, Cox Bay has hosted surfing competitions of various levels. The long sandy spit and consistent waves create an ideal venue for both professional competitions and beginner surf lessons.

Surfing and Water Sports

Cox Bay is rightfully considered one of the best surf spots on Vancouver Island. Wave heights here range from 1 to 3 meters with prevailing northeast and eastern winds. These conditions suit surfers of all skill levels — from beginners to experienced riders.

The best surfing season runs from March through July, when waves are most consistent and predictable. During this period, surf schools operate on the beach, and dozens of surfers can be in the water at the same time. Even if you don't plan to hit the water, watching the riders from the shore is a pleasure in itself.

Wildlife and Whale Watching

The western coast of Vancouver Island is renowned for its rich marine life. The whale watching season in the Cox Bay area lasts from March through October. Gray whales are the most commonly spotted, migrating along the coast. Orcas and humpback whales can also be seen here, entering these waters in search of food.

Beyond whales, the beach area is home to seals, sea lions, and numerous species of seabirds. Black bears and bald eagles inhabit the coastal forests. The nature of Clayoquot Sound has remained virtually untouched, making this place a prime destination for ecotourism.

How to Get to Cox Bay

The beach is located just 10 minutes' drive from Tofino along the Pacific Rim Highway. You can reach it by car, bus, or taxi. From Tofino-Long Beach Airport (YAZ), the beach is only a few kilometers away.

From Vancouver, you can fly to Tofino — the flight takes about 45 minutes. An alternative route is the BC Ferries ferry to Nanaimo, followed by a drive or bus ride. Seaplane flights are also available, landing directly in Tofino Inlet.

Infrastructure and Accommodation

The Pacific Sands resort hotel operates on the beach grounds, which sparked the development of all Cox Bay infrastructure. Ocean-view rooms, restaurants serving local cuisine, and spa services are available here. Guests can book excursions to hot springs and Tofino's temperate rainforests.

The beach has all the necessary amenities for relaxation: parking, changing rooms, showers, and restrooms. Beach gear shops and surfboard rental outlets are available. For those visiting with children, safe swimming zones and playgrounds are provided.
