Street History: From Nagornaya to Sukhanova

This street remembers the times when Vladivostok was just taking shape as a city. In 1886, a road was laid here, which was called Nagornaya — because of its elevated location. Even then, it was an important artery connecting different parts of the growing settlement.

In 1903, an event took place on Nagornaya that became historic for the entire Far East: the region's first bicycle track was built here. Imagine: at that time, the bicycle was an exotic mode of transport, and Vladivostok residents were able to try it out for the first time on a specially prepared track.

The street received its current name in honor of Konstantin Alexandrovich Sukhanov — the first chairman of the Vladivostok Council of Workers' and Soldiers' Deputies. In 1918, he gave his life for the ideals of the revolution, and the street became one of the monuments to his memory.

The Sukhanov family arrived in Vladivostok from Nikolsk-Ussuriysky in 1895. A year later, they settled in a one-story house on Nagornaya Street — now Sukhanova. Thus, this street became the home of the family that left a notable mark on the city's history.

At house No. 9 is the memorial house-museum of the Sukhanov family. This is the historical building of merchant Galitsky, where you can now see how an official's family lived in pre-revolutionary Vladivostok. In 1977, the museum was opened as dedicated to the political activities of Konstantin Sukhanov, and in 1991 it was reoriented to the revolutionary's father — Alexander Vasilyevich Sukhanov, a financier and manager who made a huge contribution to the development of the region's economy.

Nearby is the K. Sukhanov Square — a place with an unexpected history. Initially, the main cathedral was planned to be built here in memory of those who died in the Russo-Japanese War. But the revolution and subsequent wars changed the plans, and instead of a cathedral, a square appeared, preserving the memory of plans that were never destined to come true.

Transport Accessibility: How to Get There

Sukhanova Street is an important transport artery of the Frunzensky district. The public transport stop near houses No. 8 and No. 3a is called "Sukhanova Street – University of the Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation". The renaming occurred in connection with the opening of the university, which emphasizes the educational function of this part of the city.

This stop serves 12 bus and minibus routes, making it one of the most convenient transport hubs in the district. You can reach the funicular by buses No. 16ts, 68, 95 to the "Funicular" stop — convenient for those who want to continue to the panoramic views of the city.
