History of Student Square

Student Square in Astrakhan appeared in the early 1970s as part of the university campus. Initially, it was simply a green area for students and faculty to relax, but over time the square evolved into one of the city's key public spaces. In 2014, the area underwent a major reconstruction and reopened to visitors — now it is a well-maintained park with modern infrastructure, becoming a true gem of the Leninsky district.

Student Square is located in the Kirovsky district of Astrakhan, between Tatishchev, Savushkin, Latyshev streets and Smolyanoi Lane, directly opposite the building of Astrakhan State University. This place is easy to find — it is situated in close proximity to the ASU campus on Tatishchev Street. Monument to Magtymguly Pyragy

One of the square's main landmarks is the monument to the 18th-century Turkmen poet and thinker Magtymguly Pyragy. The six-meter monument was solemnly unveiled on May 15, 2009, in the presence of a delegation from Turkmenistan. The monument was a gift from Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov for the 450th anniversary of Astrakhan. Sculptor Saragt Babayev depicted the poet in a turban and long chapan, with a pen and book in his hands — a symbol of wisdom and enlightenment. The 1.5-ton monument was cast in Yekaterinburg and delivered to Astrakhan for installation among the trees of the student park.

Astrakhan State University

Student Square is inextricably linked to Astrakhan State University, whose main building is located directly opposite the park. ASU is one of the largest universities in the Lower Volga region, founded in 1932. The university campus occupies a vast area, and the square serves as a natural extension of the campus — here students take breaks between classes, prepare for exams, and arrange informal gatherings. The square regularly hosts university events: poetry readings dedicated to the memory of Musa Jalil, holiday concerts, and student festivals.

You can reach Student Square by public transport — there are bus stops nearby on Tatishchev and Savushkin streets. For those arriving by car, there are parking areas near the university.
