History of Wichita State University
Wichita State University (WSU) was founded in 1895 as the private Fairmount College by the Congregational Church. In 1926, the college became the Municipal University of Wichita, and in 1964 it was renamed Wichita State University and placed under the governance of the Kansas Board of Regents.
The nickname "Shockers" was coined in 1904 by a Fairmount College football manager. The name is associated with the practice of "shocking" (threshing/harvesting) wheat — early students earned money for their education by working summer jobs in the wheat fields of Kansas. Early football games were played on a field with wheat stubble, and pep club members were called "Shockers" because of their work threshing wheat.

The building was moved to the university grounds as a museum. WSU is known as the birthplace of Pizza Hut — the pizza chain was founded by students Dan and Frank Carney in 1958 in Wichita, and the original restaurant building now sits on campus as a museum.
Sports Facilities: Cessna Stadium
Cessna Stadium is a historic multi-purpose sports stadium on the northwest corner of campus (intersection of 21st Street and Hillside), which served as the home venue for the Shockers track and field team. It is currently being renovated/renamed to Crossland Stadium. The stadium is under renovation (as of 2025, phase 1A of the east side is complete), which will proceed in three phases and transform it into a modern Crossland Stadium complex with an interactive Shocker Experience Walkway exhibit.
