Uchaly: A City at the Crossroads of Europe and Asia
Uchaly is a settlement where industrial might coexists with the harsh Ural nature. The city is located among lakes on the eastern spurs of the Uraltau ridge, which serves as the boundary between Europe and Asia. Rising near the city are the mountains Tashtbyiek (height 719.4 meters) and Olatau (653 meters). The village of Uchaly has existed since the 19th century, but the area truly developed with the discovery of a copper-pyrite deposit in 1939. Uchaly received city status in 1955 during the development of the pyrite deposit.
Industrial Heart of the Southern Urals
The city-forming enterprise — the Uchaly Mining and Processing Plant — holds first place in Russia for zinc concentrate production and third place for copper concentrate production. Here, over 65% of the zinc concentrate of the Republic of Bashkortostan is produced. The Uchaly district is vast: its area is 4,510 sq. km — the 4th largest district in the republic by area.
Land of Lakes and Ancient Menhirs
This region is rightly called the land of lakes — there are 29 of them here: Kalkan, Aushkul, Urgun, Uzunkul, Bolshiye Uchaly, Malyye Uchaly, and others. Ten kilometers from the city lies one of the most popular lakes — Kalkan, along with the eponymous Mount Kalkan-tau. And not far from Uchaly are located the Akhunovo menhirs — stone monuments about 3,000 years old.
City Infrastructure and Landmarks
In the city center is the traditional large Lenin Square with a monument to Lenin. Bashkortostan Street is one of the main thoroughfares connecting the districts. Uchaly has its own cultural sites: the local history museum opened in 1962 and houses over 18,000 items in its main collection. And for residents and guests, a musical fountain operates — the third such structure in the city.
