Snow Leopard: The Highland Predator

Only about 4,000 to 7,000 snow leopards remain in the wild. The species is listed in the International Red List as vulnerable. Housing Conditions at Chattanooga Zoo

The snow leopard enclosure in Chattanooga is designed as a rocky slope with a stream, logs, existing trees, and additional coniferous plantings. A two-level wooden platform on log supports allows the animals to climb to heights, meeting their natural need for vertical territory.

The enclosure fencing consists of 4-meter-high mesh with a 50 cm overhang, additionally protected by electric wires. This ensures the safety of both animals and visitors. A small shelter-house gives the leopards a place to hide from prying eyes when they want to be alone.

Snow Leopard Behavior During Observation

Snow leopards at Chattanooga Zoo exhibit characteristic species behaviors. Chattanooga Zoo participates in the SSP (Species Survival Plan) program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for snow leopards. This program coordinates the breeding of rare species in captivity to maintain genetic diversity. In addition, the zoo collaborates with Snow Leopard Trust to support conservation of the species in the wild.

The Himalayan Passage exhibit is part of the world's largest indoor red panda enclosure, underscoring the scale of the zoo's approach to creating comfortable conditions for mountain species.
