Plaça del Mercadal in Reus — Live Webcam Online
Plaça del Mercadal — The Heart of Reus
If you want to feel the pulse of real Catalonia, this live webcam will transport you straight to Plaça del Mercadal — the main public square of Reus, where trade routes, cultural traditions, and the daily life of locals intersect. This is a place where life has been buzzing for centuries: markets were held here, festivals took place, and friends met. Today, the square remains the nerve center of the city, surrounded by arcades on three sides, behind which cozy cafés and shops are hidden.
Reus is a city in the province of Tarragona, autonomous community of Catalonia, Spain. It is known as the birthplace of Antoni Gaudí, and Plaça del Mercadal is the perfect starting point to explore his legacy. Walking through it, you find yourself at the epicenter of modernist architecture, of which Reus is rightfully proud.
Architectural Heritage of Modernism
Reus preserves one of the most important complexes of modernist buildings in Europe. In total, the city has 29 modernist buildings and 7 sites associated with Gaudí. The Modernist Route includes 26 buildings of this style, among which are works by the great architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner: Institut Pere Mata, Casa Navàs, Casa Rull, and Casa Gasull.
On Plaça del Mercadal itself, attention is drawn to Casa Navàs — a modernist building with rich decoration of mosaics, stained glass, and sculptures, showcasing Catalan Art Nouveau. This is a true gem created by a master whose works define the city's appearance. Nearby rises the Town Hall (Ajuntament de Reus) — a unique building with a special history, adorning the square.
Gaudí Centre and the Great Architect's Route
On Plaça del Mercadal is located the Gaudí Centre — the only interpretation center dedicated to the life and work of the architect, occupying 1,200 square meters. Here, the philosophy of Antoni Gaudí's architecture is presented with multimedia exhibits that immerse visitors in the world of the genius.
Reus preserves the most iconic places from Gaudí's childhood and youth. The Gaudí Route includes the house where he was born, the church where he was baptized, and other locations connected to his early years. For those who want to delve deeper into history, there are private tours of the hidden places of the square and the city — the so-called "hidden gems" of the Old Quarter.
Traditions and Festivals of the Square
Plaça del Mercadal is the main stage for city celebrations. The most important of them is the Summer Festival of Reus (Festa Major de Reus), also known as the Festival of Saint Peter. Saint Peter's Day is celebrated on June 29, and the celebration has been held since the 12th century. In 1625–1626, a relic of the saint was brought to the city, and since then this day has become special.
The core of the celebration is the procession, which has taken place for many years. Traditional dances revived at the festival include the Gypsy dance, the Dance of Joan de Vic, the Dance of Prims, the Dance of Sercolets, the Dance of Little Horses, the Dance of the Valencians, the Dance of Galeras, the Bull of Reus, the Dance of Ladies and Elders, and the Eagle. The parade of giants (Gegants) and the Mules on Plaça del Mercadal opens the festivities, accompanied by music.
In August, the Medusa Festival takes place on the square — in 2026 it is scheduled for August 16. And in winter, a Christmas Market unfolds here, creating an atmosphere of celebration and coziness.
What to Try and See Around
Plaça del Mercadal is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the local culture of enjoying vermouth (vermut). This is a traditional drink that is enjoyed here with pleasure, especially on weekends. Numerous bars and restaurants are located around the square, where you can try local dishes.
For art lovers, the Salvador Vilaseca Archaeological Museum and the Regional History Museum are open — featuring paintings and drawings by Marià Fortuny and sculptures by Joan Rebull. And the Landscape of Geniuses is a route that allows you to learn more about Gaudí and other artists such as Miró and Picasso.
Exploring the architectural ensembles of the square usually takes 1–2 hours, but if you want to cover the entire Modernist Route — a walk through nearly 80 modernist buildings in the city — it is worth setting aside a full day. Don't forget about the Vermouth Route — a tasting of the local drink, which is produced here with special care.
