History of Swan Lake and Seaside Park

The system of ponds that is now called Swan Lake did not appear here by chance. The monks of the New Athos Monastery created it in 1880, digging seven pits about 1.5 meters deep. The bottom and slopes of each pond were lined with stone tiles — an advanced technology for those times, as it was necessary to provide the monastery with fresh water. Over time, the ponds were populated with swans, and the reservoirs became a true decoration of the area.

The park around the lake appeared later. It was laid out in 1908 (according to other sources, opened in 1910 for the visit of Nicholas II). Since then, Seaside Park has become a magnet for tourists and pilgrims coming to New Athos. In the center of the largest pond, a small island with a gazebo has been built, connected by bridges, and comfortable swan houses on stilts are installed on the water — all of this is clearly visible on the live webcam.

Thanks to the subtropical climate, the park remains green all year round. Evergreen cypresses, magnolias, palms, weeping willows, oleanders, and other exotic plants are planted here. Swans are also present on the lake in winter — they do not fly away because the ponds do not freeze, and comfortable conditions have been created for them.
