Its artificial harbor serves as a true bridge between Europe, Africa, and America, making it a strategically important transshipment hub in the central Atlantic. Five centuries of history: from Columbus to the present day
The history of this harbor began with the conquest of the island on June 24, 1478 — the port has existed for over five centuries. It was here in 1492 that Christopher Columbus was forced to anchor off Gran Canaria during his first voyage to repair the ship "La Pinta", and then stopped at the Canary Islands three more times on subsequent voyages. The port's status changed forever in 1852 when the declaration of free ports (puertos francos) completely transformed the city and region, opening them up to international trade.
Architectural face of the port: from rationalism to ancient forts
The appearance of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is inseparably linked to the development of the harbor. Castillo de la Luz Castle — one of the oldest defensive structures in Las Palmas, built to protect the city and harbor from naval attacks, located near the port. The modern architectural appearance of the city was shaped by the architect Miguel Martín Fernández de la Torre (1895-1980), who from 1922 led the urban development of the city after the construction of the port. Between 1893 and 1944, a steam tramway (electrified in 1910) ran between Las Palmas and Puerto de la Luz, used to connect the city with the port.
Famous guests of La Luz harbor

Economic engine of Gran Canaria
Today, the Port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria remains the island's main maritime gateway. It is home to the largest cruise terminal in Europe and continues to serve as a traditional resupply and provisioning base for ships for five centuries. The geographical location of the harbor, located in the northeastern part of Gran Canaria island, between Punta el Nido and the city of Las Palmas, 2 nautical miles south of the northeastern tip of the island, makes it an ideal anchorage for transatlantic vessels.
